I have been struggling to decide how to build a Remote SETI Client and =
server. It is becoming clear now. I'm going to use XML-RPC as the =
transport mechanism. If you would like to keep up with the development =
check out:

http://www.seti.net/SETINet/Engineering/Software/RemoteSETI/remote_seti.h=
tm#AntennaParameters:

The next step will be to build a client that can read and display the =
current antenna position. After that the receiver settings. Then to =
set the Antenna and Receiver to where you want them. And finally to =
stream the audio to the client.

If there is anyone up to building a client of their own (say under Linux =
or in Visual Basic) I would love to work with you.

Regards....... Jim

I know that we have all been following the news for a long time, and it is
not surprise to most of us that there are in fact exoplanets in existence. We
have known this for a long time. Even simple probability theory would have an
enlightened thinker knowing this fact for at least a few hundred years now,
if not thousands.

I am referring to the new photographs of exoplanets.

But this is truly the beginning of a new era. One which will, eventually,
lead to the discovery of an earth like planet somewhere. I would again fall on
statistics as the strongest argument for this eventuality. (I.E. If an earth
planet happened here, then it must have happened any number of times wherever
there are similar circumstances).

When I sit back and think and prognosticate about the deep future, I think
that there will be the most amazing discoveries made, and then we will look
back at the people in the olden times and say "how could they have been so
narrow-minded?" What we would think now as the most amazing bits of human
knowledge, will be mundane in the future.

I then I sit back and follow the process of knowledge moving from the
amazing to the mundane. And I realize how quickly this can happen. Knowledge can
become mundane overnight. (This happens via the news, and explains why I am a
news junkie). This happens despite the fact that this is truly the start of a
new era. Everybody is just moving along, doing their own thing, going to work,
going to bed, etc. But overnight, the world has changed. We now have
photographic evidence of exoplanets.

Now, hopefully, the groundwork will be laid for more and more powerful
telescopes, that will eventually image an earthlike, watery planet somewhere.

And then we will have to go there.

John Marcus

Subject: Yes, it is the Image of an Exoplanet (ESO PR 12/05)

Dear subscribers,

Astronomers Confirm the First Image of a Planet Outside of Our Solar =
System

In February and March of this year, astronomers took new images of the =
young brown dwarf 2M1207 and its giant planet companion with the NACO =
instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope.=20

The new images show convincingly that this really is a giant planet, =
approximately five times the mass of Jupiter, that is gravitationally =
bound to the brown dwarf. It is thus the first planet that has ever been =
imaged outside of our solar system.=20

ESO Press Release 12/05 describing these results is at =

-----
At the Annual Meeting of the US National Academy of Sciences, on April =
30, ESO's Director General, Dr. Catherine Cesarsky, was officially =
inducted into this highly prestigious society. Among its distinguished =
members, the National Academy now includes 83 astronomers.=20

<html><div style='background-color:'><DIV class=RTE>Paper: astro-ph/0504648<BR>Date: Fri, 29 Apr 2005 13:07:16 GMT&nbsp;&nbsp; (32kb)<BR><BR>Title: Lithopanspermia in Star Forming Clusters<BR>Authors: Fred C. Adams and David N. Spergel<BR>Comments: 27 pages including 5 figures; accepted to Astrobiology<BR>\\<BR>&nbsp; This paper considers the lithopanspermia hypothesis in star forming groups<BR>and clusters, where the chances of biological material spreading from one solar<BR>system to another is greatly enhanced (relative to the field) due to the close<BR>proximity of the systems and lower relative velocities. These effects more than<BR>compensate for the reduced time spent in such crowded environments. This paper<BR>uses 300,000 Monte Carlo scattering calculations to determine the cross<BR>sections for rocks to be captured by binaries and provides fitting formulae for<BR>other
applications. We assess the odds of transfer as a function of the<BR>ejection speed and number of members in the birth aggregate. The odds of any<BR>given ejected meteroid being recaptured by another solar system are relatively<BR>low. Because the number of ejected rocks per system can be large, virtually all<BR>solar systems are likely to share rocky ejecta with all of the other solar<BR>systems in their birth cluster. The number of ejected rocks that carry living<BR>microorganisms is much smaller and less certain, but we estimate that several<BR>million rocks can be ejected from a biologically active solar system. For<BR>typical birth environments, the capture of life bearing rocks is expected to<BR>occur 10 -- 16,000 times per cluster (under favorable conditions), depending on<BR>the ejection speeds. Only a small fraction of the captured rocks impact the<BR>surfaces of terrestrial
planets, so that only a few lithopanspermia events are<BR>expected (per cluster).<BR>\\ ( <A href="javascript:ol('http://arXiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0504648');"><FONT color=#000099>http://arXiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0504648</FONT></A> ,&nbsp; 32kb)<BR></DIV></div></html>

I have posted the first version of the Remote SETI Client:
http://www.seti.net/SETINet/SETINet.htm
Please download and install this version and test it.=20

It should start and find its way to my Remote SETI Server when you press =
the Hello button. =20

Then switch to the Antenna Parms. page and press Get Antenna Parameters =
button. The three lights in the middle should light up.=20

Then press the Start Az/El Update. The two gauges will report the =
current antenna position on the blue needle (Elevation) and yellow =
triangle (Az).

Please play with it for a bit and email me any results - good or bad.

Thanks........... Jim

SETIzens,
The Summer 2005 issue of SearchLites (volume 11, number 3) has now been
released. It is available for download from the Members' section of The
SETI League website (browse to www.setileague.org, scroll down to
"Members Only," and follow the link) by using the User Name and Password
you received with your 2005 membership renewal letter.
If you have not received your User Name and Password, it is probable
that you have not yet paid your 2005 membership dues. In this case, I
encourage you to do so promptly, so you can enjoy our Newsletter, as
well as a host of other SETI League membership benefits.
If you renewed and have forgotten your access information, you will
have to email our secretary, Heather Wood, at hwood50@aol.com. After
she has verified your membership status, she can then email you the
pertinent information.
Thank you for your ongoing support of The SETI League. Enjoy your
quarterly newsletter.
	Yours for SETI Success,
		Paul

I need to run a test on the latest Remote Client - anyone up for it =
tonight?
Download the latest client at:

http://www.seti.net/SETINet/SETINet.htm
1.. Start the client and hit HELLO.=20
2.. If it logs on move to the second page and hit the left switch. =20
3.. If the Antenna Server is on line it should light a light.
4.. If the Antenna itself is on line it should light another light.

When all the lights are on push the right switch. Your now following =
the antenna in Az and El.

Drop me an email with what you find.

Thanks...... Jim

I had to restart my client after the error message. Still seeing blue

Paul reported an error from the client when it encountered a dead =
server. That's a big I have to fix of course. Thanks Paul

I see your client recovered well enough. I also see one other client on =
line with a blank ArgusStationID.

This test went well enough that the next one will be where the client =
gets to move the antenna - that should be exciting....

I'll leave the server running for a couple of more hours.

Looks like the restart of the Remote server killed off most of the =
clients... No wait... I see...Paul...and a couple of other on line =
again.

SETIzens,
I was informed this afternoon that Hal Elzig, W6YJL, passed awy
yesterday. He would have been 82 ywears old. Hal was the founder of
Halted, the famous Silicon Valley electronics surplus store where many
startups (indluding my own company, Microcomm) bought their test
equipment and components. I memorialized Hal in song four years ago:

Anyone up for another test???

On this one the client is assigned the status of Master Client and will =
have full control of the antenna. This is on a first come/first served =
bases. Once you become the Master Client you can set the position of =
the antenna in Az and El

Simply download the latest client:
http://www.seti.net/SETINet/SETINet.htm

and start it. Then in this order:
1.. Set your Argus station ID into the box (guest or anything else =
works fine at this point). Say Hello. This logs you in to the server.
2.. Switch to the Antenna Params. page where the two gauges are. Set =
the left most switch. If you were able to log in correctly it will be =
enabled for you. This downloads the physical configuration of the =
antenna at the current time.
3.. If the Antenna Serve is On Line its LED will come on.
4.. If the antenna itself is On Line, either live or in demo mode, its =
LED will be on.
5.. Press the right most switch. This starts refreshing your client =
with the current antenna Az and El.
6.. If you are first in you will automatically become the Client =
Master and the LED on the Setup page will light.
7.. If you are Master you can move the antenna by 'pulling' the Yellow =
needle on the El gauge or the Red needle on the Az gauge. The other two =
needles should move to the position you selected. =20

You can't cause any problems with the antenna in demo mode so play with =
it for a while. If you shut off the right most switch you will stop =
updating your display and after 1 minute the Master Client will go to =
the next client using the system.

Please email me with your observations on the system so far.

Regards........... Jim

It began with the search for Planet X. By 1979, Pioneer 10 had =

might detect an unexpected gravitational tug that could betray the =
existence of the long-hypothesized Planet X. Based largely on =
unexplained motions in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, several =
20th-century astronomers had suggested the existence of an undiscovered =
world at the edge of our solar system.

Several people were able to log in and run the antenna through its =
paces. Paul Shuch, New Jersey, was the first to control the antenna Az =
and El remotely. Hamdi Mani from Tunisia was the second. Many others =
ran the system in the demo mode and it seemed to work fine. =20
Several problems surfaced. They are:

1. After a server restart the clients can log in but when they attempt =
to start the Az/El refresh it blows there clients up. At first I =
thought it was a problem with the operating system because the problems =
all occurred on XP machines, but Paul was able to run fine with both =
Win98 and XP. The problem seems to be in the client.

2. Paul pointed out that I have the stop-to-stop rings (their called =
annulars) on both the Az and El gauges setup wrong.

3. I found that the Antenna server user interface doesn't come up when =
the remote server is running on Win 2003 server. I have no idea why but =
I have to move the server to that machine so I can continue development =
on this machine (Zeke).

4. I am going to add a one line chat to the client. That would help =
greatly and reduce the load on the SETI League list servers.

5. I will move the LED that signals when you are the Master Client to a =
place that can be viewed from any page. I will also show who is the =
Master Client. by name. on each of the clients so there will be less =
confusion.

That should fix up this version of the client. Then I can move to the =
next level The next client major release will have the Sky Map hooked =
in so that you can see what point in the sky the antenna is point at. I =
will also allow the antenna to track a specific point. After that =
streaming audio in MP3 format and saving of the raw WAV files to the =
archives. Lots of work left to do...

If you are interested in participating in the next test (I can't say for =
sure when that will be) you can join the beta team. Email me and I'll =
put you in a notify list when the next test comes about. That way we =
can agree on what type of information I need when a flame out occurs =
(what Op system, what were you doing, demo or live, etc). That will be =
a big help.

Thanks again for all the help. Its only by using something that you can =
work the bugs out.
