using the SETI Net Clock with a Visual Basic Client to control it...

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's latest image of the star V838 =

surrounding dusty cloud structures. The effect, called a 'light echo', =
has been unveiling never-before-seen dust patterns ever since the star =

My SETI antenna cannot lift it's self anymore (old motors, worn bearings =
etc.) and I need to add a counterweight to it. Does anyone have some =
experience with a counterweight on a large antenna (12')? How is it =
attached? How long is the arm? How much weight?

Thanks for the information Ed. I am glad your reminded me about the =

  Jim,

Sorry I think I misinterpreted your question. =20

If you are looking for mechanical designs. I have seen some amateurs =
use two parallel poles with dumb-bell weights slid so you can sadjust =
the balance. I another the ham used metal bucket fille diwth concrete. =

My 2.5m dish is constructed with a square steel channel back frame so =
the simple solution was to drill and bolt some angle iron to hold =
concrete blocks which I secured with rope...crude but functional. The =
antenna actually has several adjustable counterweights but I unbalanced =
it when I removed the ku-band transceiver box which weighed about 40-lbs =
(it was worth $500 on the surplus market). =20

Whatever you decide on be sure that the counterweight structure is =
stiff and will not flex, otherwise the dish will bounce all over in a =
wind..possibly even set up a mechanical oscillation in some conditions.

  Hope that is some help.

Jim,
=20
The same problem that you described was also encountered in my
construction with a 3m antenna. When you look at the picture of the
antenna mount:
http://wegalink.com/img/antenna_mount.jpg
there is a threaded rod visible which is loaded with several hundred
kilopond under normal weather conditions. An actuator that was mounted
in that place which was designed for 500 Kp did not stand the first
small storm. Thus I came also to the conclusion that balancing the
antenna is needed. So in spring I intend to put a counterweight which
weighed about 20 Kg to the other side of the center of rotation opposed
to the antenna. Mounted in a distance of about 80 cm the counterweight
should balance a considerable part of the antenna weight. Afterwards I
hope that the elevation actuator will be able to move the antenna again
up and down and stand all weather conditions.
=20
Hope this could give some hints.
Eckhard

A Mysterious Streak Above Hawaii=20
Credit: Night Sky Live<http://nightskylive.net/> Collaboration=20
Explanation: What in heavens-above was that? Not everything seen on the =
night sky is understood. The Night Sky Live<http://nightskylive.net/> =
(NSL) project keeps its global array of continuously updating web =
cameras (CONCAMs) always watching the night sky. On the night of 2004 =
December 17, the fisheye<http://www.zeta.org.au/~andrewa/ajaa31.htm> =
CONCAM perched on top of an active =
volcano<http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/volcanoes/haleakala/main.html> in =
Haleakala<http://nightskylive.net/hl/>, Hawaii<http://www.state.hi.us/>, =
saw something moving across the night sky that remains mysterious. The =
NSL team might have disregard the above streak as unconfirmed, but the =
Mauna Kea CONCAM<http://nightskylive.net/mk/> on the next Hawaiian =
island recorded the same =
thing<http://nightskylive.net/mk/mk041217/mk041217ut142325p.jpg>. The =
NSL team might then have disregard the streak as a satellite, but no =
record of it was found in the =
heavens-above.com<http://www.heavens-above.com/> site that usually =
documents bright satellite events. If you think you have a reasonable =
explanation<http://badastronomy.com/bad/misc/index.html> for the streak, =
please contribute to the on-line =
discussion<http://bb.nightskylive.net/asterisk/viewtopic.php?t=3D291>. =
Current candidates include a known =
satellite<http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap991022.html> that was =
somehow missed by heavens-above<http://heavens-above.com/>, a recently =
launched rocket<http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap041212.html>, and a =
passing space<http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap031015.html> rock. =
Volunteers are =
solicited<http://bb.nightskylive.net/asterisk/viewtopic.php?t=3D385> by =
the NSL project to help monitor the operability of each NSL CONCAM, =
including looking for interesting =
anomalies<http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap041207.html> such as this. =
Disclosure: Robert =
Nemiroff<http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/htmltest/rjn.html> collaborates on =
both the NSL<http://nightskylive.net/> and APOD<http://apod.nasa.gov/> =
projects.=20

There is a new version of the SETI Net Clock Server (version 3.0.3) =
available now. This one allows you to right click in the Sky Map to set =
the current star position. It also exposes several new properties if =
you are writing a Visual Basic client that uses the clock. They are:

property StarAz: Single read Get_StarAz write Set_StarAz;
property StarEl: Single read Get_StarEl write Set_StarEl;
property AzMax: Single read Get_AzMax write Set_AzMax;
property AzMin: Single read Get_AzMin write Set_AzMin;
property ElMax: Single read Get_ElMax write Set_ElMax;
property ElMin: Single read Get_ElMin write Set_ElMin;
property Version: WideString read Get_Version;
property AntennaAz: Single read Get_AntennaAz write Set_AntennaAz;
property AntennEl: Single read Get_AntennEl write Set_AntennEl;

These allow you to slew your antenna to a star and track its position as =
it moves through your antenna range.

Email me if you have problems... =20

David (and all others). Try version 2.0.4 it should work for you. I keep
forgetting to compile the last release so that it will fit on a smaller

Hi David - I'm glad that I got it right at least once in a row <grin>. BTW
I made a spelling error in the OLE interface for the clock so a new version
is available that fixes it if you need it.

When the conversion switch is to the right the clock is calculating the star
Az/ El at the DEC/RA entered. When the switch is the other way its
calculating the DEC/RA that is being pointed at by the fixed AZ/El. Sounds
like you need to throw the switch (stop the clock first).

One cross is where you antenna is pointing (set up on the Antenna Parameters
form) the other is the star you are point at. On my system I pick up the
current stare /El from the OLE server (StarAz and StarEl) then command my
antenna to move to that point. As its moving I send to the OLE server the
current antenna position (AntennaAz and AntennaEl) and watch as the antenna
bug hunts for the star bug and finally lands on it. I love it...

Rover rotini revisited

While this "Spirited" case of an odd imprint may be closed, another =
rover find remains puzzling.

Early in its mission at Meridiani Planum, the Opportunity Mars rover =
shot back a Microscopic Imager photo that included a feature shaped like =
a rotini pasta<http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4402153/>. At the time, its =
profile sparked discussion both inside and outside of the NASA Mars =
Rover Exploration team.=20

"I am surprised I do not hear any more commotion about the good old =
'rotini' shape from Meridiani in the early part of the mission," Gorevan =
said. "We have not yet been able to duplicate that shape with the RAT or =
any M=F6ssbauer spectrometer or alpha particle X-ray spectrometer =
contact mechanisms."

But Gorevan hastened to add: "That's infinitely far from saying it is of =
biologic origin, but it is proving resistant to duplication."

Gorevan and his team have performed no direct tests attempting to =
duplicate the "rotini" feature.=20

"Frankly, I do not know how to construct such a test," Gorevan =
explained.=20

"What we are doing is looking out for features that might be embryonic =
or very old forms of the rotini feature that might have been made with =
the RAT. More attention will be paid on this effort toward examination =
of terrestrial specimens," Gorevan noted.

No one on the Mars science team has made a request for Gorevan and his =
associates to try to devise some way to duplicate a rotini feature with =
their hardware. "And right now we have our hands full in keeping up with =
this lovely mission that never ends," he said.

A study of people with language

mathematical skill evolved
independently of language.
Researchers studied three people
with extensive damage to the brain's
left hemisphere, including language
areas. All were competent
calculators, though, able to solve
simple subtraction, division and

A faint red star found five years ago is the 28th
closest star system to the Sun. A new, precise
parallax yields the best distance ever determined for
the star: 13.2 +/- 0.1 light-years--about three times
the distance of Alpha Centauri.

The star is a red or brown dwarf. The full story:=20

RELEASE: 05-052

NASA STATEMENT ON FALSE CLAIM OF EVIDENCE OF LIFE ON MARS

News reports on February 16, 2005, that NASA scientists from Ames =
Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., have found strong evidence that =
life may exist on Mars are incorrect.

NASA does not have any observational data from any current Mars missions =
that supports this claim. The work by the scientists mentioned in the =
reports cannot be used to directly infer anything about life on Mars, =
but may help formulate the strategy for how to search for martian life. =
Their research concerns extreme environments on Earth as analogs of =
possible environments on Mars. No research paper has been submitted by =
them to any scientific journal asserting martian life.

www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=3D418683#418683>

The two researchers, Carol Stoker and Larry Lemke, do think they may =
have evidence for methane in Mars' atmosphere. Methane cannot last long =
without being replenished, and it's not easy to replenish it. There are =
non-biological ways (for example, sunlight + C02 plus water, which can =
be found on Mars), but life is the easiest way we know of. As the story =
went, they had a secret meeting -- with whom, we don't know -- and they =
were discussing releasing this bombshell to either coincide or predate =
an article submitted to Nature, a premier scientific journal.=20

But -- and this is the important bit -- there was never any meeting! Nor =
is there a Nature paper.=20

I have a friend, Penny Boston<http://www.ees.nmt.edu/boston/>, who =
studies cave geomicrobiology, just the kind of life this story is =
talking about. She is good friends with Carol Stoker. I happened to =
email Penny yesterday to tease her a little about Hoagland's silly =
claims on C2C last night (he happened to mention her name), and she =
emailed me back today. She told me that Dr. Stoker had emailed her about =
all this. Dr. Stoker has issued a statement, which I will quote here:=20

      Dr. Carol Stoker wrote:=20

A story has appeared in Space.com which quotes us=20
inaccurately and without permission. The story is based on hearsay =

      and is factually incorrect.=20

      Here are the facts:=20

      1. On Sunday night we were attending a private party=20
of space exploration enthusiasts in which there was a=20
discussion about the possible meaning of the results=20
from recent Mars missions. We engaged in the=20
discussion and expressed thoughts and opinions as=20
individual scientists on our own time and did not=20
represent ourselves as speaking for NASA.=20

      2. No one at the party identified themselves as a=20
reporter, and in fact no reporters were present. This=20
article is based on hearsay about what somebody at the=20
party thought they heard us say. We think this=20
      represents extremely poor journalistic standards.=20

      3. No Nature paper has been submitted with Rio Tinto=20
results. This claim is simply wrong and we did not=20
make this claim. The MARTE project has several papers=20
in preparation that describe the work we are doing at=20
Rio Tinto and the first results of that work, but=20
nothing has been submitted yet. Preliminary results=20
have been published in abstract form at various=20
scientific meetings. If you want to see what the MARTE=20
team has actually said about results from Rio Tinto=20
drilling and its relevance to life on Mars, go to=20
      www.marteproject.com<http://www.marteproject.com/> and click on =
publications. All=20
our REAL publications are posted there.=20

      4. The work at Rio Tinto is relevant to finding life=20
in a subsurface terrestrial environment and can't be=20
used to infer anything about life on Mars, directly.=20
The Rio Tinto work by its very nature can't tell us if=20
there is life on Mars, but certainly helps formulate=20
the strategy for how to search for life on Mars. One=20
approach to searching for extant life on Mars is by=20
drilling. Partly for this reason, the MARTE project=20
was selected for funding by NASA's ASTEP program, out=20
of the Science Mission Directorate and is a joint=20
project between NASA and Spain's Center for=20
      Astrobiology.=20

    =20

So there you go. There is clearly more going to happen here. Will NASA =
issue a press release about all this? What will space.com do? I do not =
yet have all the facts. Dr. Stoker is clearly upset with space.com, but =
I will reserve judgement until I find out more.=20

'Pack ice' suggests frozen sea on Mars

An 800-kilometre-wide sea, surviving as broken plates, appears to=20
lie just beneath the surface in observations from the Mars Express=20
spacecraft. The sea is just 5 degrees north of the Martian equator=20
and would be the first discovery of a large body of water outside=20
the planet's polar ice caps.

Scaling Back on SETICon

For more information contact: Dr. H. Paul Shuch, Executive Director
(201) 641-1770, or email info@setileague.org

Little Ferry, NJ.., 19 February 2005 -- Five years after initiating its
SETICon Technical Symposium, the nonprofit, membership-supported SETI
League has had to scale back the annual membership event to more modest
proportions. Because The SETI League chose to make its meetings
affordable and accessible to a wide range of amateur radio astronomers,
the events have proved a steady drain on the grassroots science group's
limited financial resources. Hence, the organization's 2005 annual
meeting will be held in conjunction with another, much larger and
well-established conference.

"The last few SETICons cost us about $4,000 each to put on," notes Dr.
H. Paul Shuch, volunteer executive director of The SETI League.
"Depending as we do upon membership dues and individual contributions,
we thought our limited funding would be better spent on SETI science
than on hosting scientific meetings." Consequently, Shuch announced, The
SETI League's 2005 Annual Membership Meeting will be held on the campus
of The College of New Jersey, in conjunction with the annual Trenton
Computer Festival.

This year's Trenton Computer Festival is scheduled to run the weekend of
16-17 April, 2005, with The SETI League's membership meeting to be held
there on Sunday morning, 17 April, from 10 AM until Noon. SETI League
members desiring to avail themselves of a full weekend of social and
technical activities are encouraged to register for TCF. Some SETI
enthusiasts will be presenting papers on the scientific Search for
Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence on Saturday, in conjunction with the
regular TCF Technical Program.

There is a registration fee for TCF. Details (including location,
lodging, and scheduled activities) appear on the TCF Website,
www.tcf-nj.org. There will be no charge for those wishing simply to
attend the SETI League Annual Membership Meeting, and all members (and
prospective members) are most welcome. Annual meeting details, including
the Agenda, appear online at www.setileague.org/seticon/meet2005.htm.

The SETI League expresses its gratitude to its friends at the Trenton
Computer Festival and The College of New Jersey, for hosting them in a
year in which their organization's finances preclude sponsoring their
own technical event. Interested parties can show their appreciation by
registering for TCF, and attending both events.

Largely using radio telescopes and optical telescopes, SETI scientists
seek to determine whether humankind is alone in the universe. Since
Congress terminated NASA's SETI funding in 1993, The SETI League and
other scientific groups have privatized the research. Amateur and
professional scientists interested in participating in the search for
intelligent alien life, and citizens wishing to help support it, should
email join@setileague.org, check the SETI League Web site at
http://www.setileague.org/, send a fax to +1 (201) 641-1771, or contact
The SETI League, Inc. membership hotline at +1 (800) TAU-SETI. Be sure
to provide us with a postal address to which we will mail further
information. The SETI League, Inc. is a membership-supported, non-profit
[501(c)(3)], educational and scientific corporation dedicated to the
scientific Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence.

P.S. Tearsheets are always appreciated. Thank you.

Our weekly Science News magazine TV show "Catatlyst" here in Oz screened =
a "world exclusive" which explained the life on Mars theory of Vittorio =
Formizano - Mars Express has picked up signs of formaldehyde and in such =
quantities that it can only be from chemically altered methane seeping =
out of the soil. Since formaldehyde has an atmospheric life of just 7 =
hours lots of methane is involved in oxidation reactions producing it. =
Five million of tons of methane per year, far more than current =
estimates of likely present-day volcanism.
Formizano is convinced it can only be biogenic...

..the reporting was fairly restrained letting Formizano explain the =
data and the implications. Combined with the Mars Express locality data =
on methane and water it almost seems like a slam dunk. The reporter =
actually acknowledged it was tentative and could be reinterpreted, but =
that seems less likely with every new water site on Mars.=20

Transit Timing to Detect Terrestrial Planets=20

"The Use of Transit Timing to Detect Terrestrial-Mass Extrasolar =
Planets," by Matthew Holman (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for =
Astrophysics) and Norman Murray at the University of Toronto, appears in =
the February 25th issue of Science<http://www.sciencemag.org/>. The =
paper covers a new planet-finding technique that studies transit time; =
i.e., the amount of time it takes a planet to orbit its star. Transit =
timing studies the variation in apparent stellar brightness caused by =
the passage of a planet in front of its star as seen from Earth.=20

Because the timing of the transit will vary depending on the presence of =
other planets in the system, astronomers should be able to make =
estimates about the mass of a second planet. And here's the best part: =
While the current radial velocity observations that have been used to =
detect most of the 150 known extrasolar planets cannot be used for =
terrestrial worlds, this method may just be sensitive enough to detect =
them. The method has implications for future transit studies, including =
NASA's Kepler mission<http://www.kepler.arc.nasa.gov/>.

The complete reference is Science (25 February 2005), Vol. 307, pp. =
1288-1291. The Science paper requires membership in AAAS, but see "The =
Use of Transit Timing to Detect Extrasolar Planets with Masses as Small =
as Earth," =
