To the Seti list,

As some of you know, I was hit with a worm virus last Friday that started
emailing copies of itself to my address book. Obviously, my virus detector
didn't catch it but several of you did, and I was warned in time to prevent
a real disaster. Thanks to those of you who alerted me. My sincere regrets
to those of you who were victimized by this one. I hope your virus software
was more up-to-date than mine was last Friday. Mine is now current with
McAfee 6.0. and I will certainly take steps to keep it current.

The odd thing is figuring out how it got into my system in the first place
since I never open attachments unless I know who they are from and I'm
expecting them. A computer specialist friend of mine told me that some of
these viruses open from the preview screen even if you don't actually open
the attachment. Live and learn!

Cheers, Val Phoenix

Hi everyone,

We may not be able to detect any ET signal for a few centuries but this
is
not a reason to do not have some fun meanwhile. Let's sharpen our
decrypting
skill on some simulated data:

http://www3.sympatico.ca/stephane_dumas/CETI/output_stream.txt

By the way, like in the real world, there is plenty of noise, and the
format is not
necessary obvious. Me ans Stephane Dumas are working on a automatic
decoding
method for such application. Our program is not ready yet but we will
follow this
"experiment" closely.

Enjoy,

Yvan Dutil

How the Universe Will End
A new theory from theoretical astrophysicist Abraham Loeb predicts that o=

from each other because of some unknown force expanding the universe. In=

SETIzens,

Happy Holidays to all!

Every year The SETILeague endeavors to find an individual or individuals who
have made some great contribution to the art and science of SETI. This
person does not necessarily need to be a SETILeague member, but does need to
have done something to advance our efforts in this field of study.

I'm asking that we all put our thinking caps on and see if there isn't
someone that fits this bill. If you are not sure of the qualifications,
please go to: http://www.setileague.org/awards/awards.htm and follow the
links to Bruno award. Remember, the Bruno, if awarded, will be presented at
SETICON '02. Also, the deadline for nominations is Dec 31, 2001. So please,
nominate now, nominate often. Your continued participation makes it all
possible.

Thank you for your attention and your support.

Sincerely,

David M. Ocame/N1YVV
Awards Chair

SETIzens,

I am happy to see the number of nominations coming in for the 2002 Bruno
Award. Unfortunately, I was not clear in my last e.mail, so please allow me
to clarify.

We need for those doing the nominating to be SETILeague members, in good
standing. The candidates you submit DO NOT need to be members. All
SETILeague members are welcome and encouraged to participate as much as they
like. Nominate often, but nominate different people. It is the form of a
candidates contributions to the art and science of SETI that determines the
recipient of the award, not the number of times an individual is nominated.
Also, plesae DO include their contributions in as much detail as possible.
We cannot consider candidates for whom we do not know their accomplishments.

Each year, the Awards Committee, which I head, endeavors to submit three
worthy candidates for the Bruno to the Executive Board. It is the Executive
Board that makes the final decision whom it is, if anyone, that receives
the award in any given year.

Also, please don't forget to nominate for the Orville N. Greene award. These
nominees DO NEED to be SETILeague members that have performed extraordinary
volunteer service over the past year.

Please go to the SETILeague website: www.setileague.org and click on awards
to review all the information about these awards and the rules for
nominating candidates. Remember, nominations close for both the Bruno and
the Orville Greene Awards on January 1st. So nominate now!

Incidentally, anyone wishing to serve on the Awards Committee should contact
me direct at n1yvv@hotmail.com.

Thanks and Happy Holidays!!!
