SETIzens,

Hello to all!

I am writing because I know that you all have at one time or another come
across some very excellent websites related to SETI in your STEWs (Search
for Terrestrially Excellent Websites). Why not nominate some of them for our
SETISuperstar award?

Go to: http://www.setileague.org/awards/awards.htm and follow the link to
'Superstar' and choose nomination form. It's that easy!

While you're there, on the same page, are links to the nomination form for
this year's Giordano Bruno Award to be named at SETICon02. Do you know of
someone who deserves to be nominated for this, our most prestigious award?
Then nominate them and do it soon. The deadline is coming up fast!

Thank you for your attention and your support.

Sincerely,

David M. Ocame/N1YVV
Awards Chair
The SETILeague, Inc.

Hi all!

I am in the happy position of being "..a go" for an ARGUS station. I talked
to my partner about a large dish in the backyard and computers running 24
hours a day and she said "yeah, that would be great!" (Then she finished
dropping off to slumber-land...timing is everything!)

So, with that, anyone know where I can pick up a dish suitable for our
purposes? I need it to be local to my home in New Haven, CT.

Thanks!

Dave Ocame/N1YVV

David, you will need to beat the bushes to find one. Rural areas are the=
best place to start. People tend towards the 18-inch ones now and haven=
't taken down the old big ones. It's easy to spot ones not in use: wires=
dangling, no feed, etc. Stop and make a deal...they may let you have it=
free just to dismantle it. Or go to a satellite shop. I only had room =
for a 9-footer, and bought a new one for $200. Good luck and happy hunti=
ng, Lee.

Posted on behalf of KA1RI/8:

>I have a nice little used 1500e with the optional software suite for sale.
Do
youperhaps know of anyone in SETI who might be looking for one? They run
about $600 new, sottware is additional, but I'd sell this one for $300
shipping included if it goes to a good home!

Please drop me a note if you know of a potential home for it.

Hi all, from time to time I see email concerning coordinates for an Argus=
station, astronomy software, computer logging programs, satellite orbit =
programs, etc. If you do not have a GPS unit, go to http://MapsOnUs.com.=
Note upper and lower case. Unless you want to resister, just click on =
"Maps", Enter your address, click "Draw Map". Click to zoom in all the =
way. Place your pointer as close to the location (your home) as you can =
and "click" to center that spot on the map. The map will redraw, and you=
r coordinates will show at the bottom, in decimal. The decimal portion c=
an be converted to minutes by multiplying by 60. For example, given: -88=
.115564 longitude, thus (0.115564 X 60 =3D 6.9338 minutes). AND, the dec=
imal minutes are converted to seconds by multiplying by 60 (0.9338 X 60 =3D=
 56.0304 seconds). Rounding, equals -88 deg 07 56''. Also written as, 8=
8 deg 07' 56'' W. Hope this helps, Lee.

After fighting through the consequences of having the whole of this
message on one line (if your mail reader didn't try to display it that
way, it is broken - most GUI ones are broken), I found, not
unsurprisingly, given how domain names work, that all lower case
worked perfectly well. However...

After doing this, I got asked for a street address and some combination
of state and zip code. I interpreted zip code as being the same as post
code, but on submission I got told my address was not found and the state
code was missing. England is not yet the next state of the USA!

I thought this was off charter as was cross-posting to both lists.

For the UK you can use http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ It will give you
your Lat/Long pretty accurately from a postcode, streetname etc. Type in
the postcode, look at the map, then click on the 'convert' link (blue text
on a blue background!) and you get Lat/Long as some of the values.

I received a virus from Valdemar Phoenix in response to this morning's
email. It's a malformed MIME email message purporting to be a sound
file but actually a Windows executable using obfuscated file name
extensions; I seem to recognize this as one of the recent worms.

The sender is almost certainly a victim, but anyone else who has
recently posted using Windows email software and who is not fully
up to date on Windows critical updates, may have been infected.

I have also received it from another source, but with no subject, so
possibly not triggered by that message.

Valdemar, please disconnect from the internet immediately.
