Personal SETI Message to Space Stars Planets!

Send Your Own Personal Message-Payolad To Space!

NOW you can broadcast a personal message to space – to nearly any star
system or planet visible in the northern hemisphere! AND in addition –
receive a unique, full color frameable certificate with your message
printed on it! We will broadcast your 25 word message from our Radio
Telescope Command Center and send it on its way at the speed of light to
its destination. We are capable of broadcasting messages to nearly any
point in our solar system, to the core of the Milky Way Galaxy where your
message is certain to pass millions of star systems and countless planets
as well as targeting individual stars.

Want to know what the choices are? When the auction is paid, we will send
you the address of out online catalogue where you can scour the listed
destinations, or you may send us the coordinates in the Northern
Hemisphere. Within two weeks, your message will be digitized in a special
Stellar Payload Packet and launched to the stars!

Some ideas for messages include: Personal Declarations, Memorial Messages
to Commemorate a Loved One or a Special One, Declarations of Love,
Proposals of Marriage, Graduation Announcements, etc. There is no limit!
Our online catalogue will help you put it together! In addition, our
catalogue will also allow you to choose more message options, if you
decide, including repeated broadcasts, longer messages or custom scheduling
of our Radio Telescope Command Center Facilities.

Within four weeks, you will receive your own full color Certificate of
Interstellar Payload Launch with your message on the certificate and the
destination!

SETIzens,
	I am looking for a member who likes to read, and can write clearly, to do
a periodic book review column for SearchLites and our website. We will
provide the SETI-related books; you need to read them and write up a brief
(~500 word) blurb about once per month. Email me directly
<n6tx@setileague.org> if interested. (Sorry, The SETI League cannot pay
our columnists with anything other than our gratitude.)
	Yours for SETI Success,

Dear SETIzens,
	This is a reminder that the pre-registration deadline for SETICon01 is
just a week away! Although you may certainly register at the door (for $10
more), your pre-registration will enable us to better plan for a successful
Technical Symposium. We already have a full program of twelve top-notch
technical presentations on Saturday, some really nice prize donations to be
won our Saturday night Awards Banquet, and an informative Membership
Meeting planned for Sunday morning.
	As an added incentive, those of you pre-registering by the April 15
deadline will be personally invited to our Friday night Hospitality Suite.
(Well, OK, everyone is invited, but if I don't have you pre-registered, I
have no way to tell you what hotel room it's in!)
	Once again, SETICon01 details may be found online, at:
<http://www.setileague.org/admin/meet2001.htm>.
Your pre-registration form appears at:
<http://www.setileague.org/admin/register.htm>.
	Looking forward to seeing you in Trenton (in just over two weeks).
	Cheers --  Paul

SETIzens,
	Member Milan Hudecek of WiNRADiO Communications has just donated one of
their lovely Model 1550e receivers (brand new, in the box) to be given out
as the Grand Prize at our Awards Banquet on Saturday, 28 April. Some lucky
SETI League member will be going home with a fine Project Argus receiver
-- but it won't be you, if you haven't registered for the Banquet!
Although yesterday was the pre-reg deadline, I can still squeeze in a few
more chairs, if I hear from you by tomorrow. You may use the online
Registration Form at <http://www.setileague.org/admin/register.htm>.

states, in part:

>With the United States, Argentina, Australia, Great Britain and Italy
searching seriously, and 19 other privately funded telescopes searching as
well, Tarter and other scientists want a set of global rules to determine
how to tell the world about a discovery.

It appears Jill can't count (or the reporter misquoted her), as 105 of

Several of you have requested further technical details about The SETI
League's recently commissioned lunar reflective microwave calibration
beacon. A new webpage will be uploaded Saturday morning at 0000 UTC, with
information and photos. It will be linked from a Moonbounce banner in the
upper left corner of the main web page <http://www.setileague.org>. If you
have further questions after reviewing this page, don't hesitate to ask.

Nice to have you back onboard, RJ. I trust this means you have freed
yourself up from some of your business responsibilities, and are now
planning to do some more work on RAOOS? Please do keep us all posted.

Yes on both counts. I am reducing my hours at work (eating up too much
of my free time) and working on RAOOS again. I also just found out that
Micki is giving me a new dish for my birthday (two weeks) and I'll be
back on-line with Argus shortly after.

All is well as I hope it is with you and everyone working with The SETI
League.

Well, since Schrodenger's cat is out of the bag, I guess I can tell you to
pass this on to Micki: there's a nice looking 10 foot mesh dish on Page 12
of the current (Summer 2001) Skyvision catalog, for just $499.95 (plus,
unfortunately, $95 shipping). They don't list dishes on their website, but
the phone number is 1(800)500-9275.
	Happy birthday, RJ!

Pioneer 10 lives on.=20

  Pioneer 10:=20

Distance from Sun : 77.67 AU
Speed relative to the Sun: 12.24 km/sec (27,380 mph)
Distance from Earth: 11.74 billion kilometers (7.29 billion miles)
Round-trip Light Time: 21 hours 45 minutes=20

Good News!! Pioneer 10 lives on.=20

At GMT 17:27:30, Saturday, 4/28/01, the signal from Pioneer 10 was =
received at station 63 in Madrid, the first time since August 19 of last =
year. As Samuel Clemens (AKA Mark Twain) once reported to the newspaper =
- "The report of my death was an exaggeration" could be applied to the =
premature reports of the demise of Pioneer 10.=20

Once again - muchas gracias - to the DSS 63 crew for their continuing =
excellent support.=20

So it appears that Pioneer 10 has life, albeit in another mode - only in =
a two-way coherent mode. Our Chief Flight Controller Ric Campo says, "In =
order [for Pioneer 10] to talk to us, we need to talk to it." This means =
from now on, we need two-way round-trip light time (RTLT) passes to =
allow the Deep Space Network (DSN) to send up a strong stable signal to =
lock up with a coherent downlink signal.=20

We will have to schedule tracks on the busy DSN schedule to allow uplink =
and downlink support (competition for time includes Galileo, Cassini and =
Ulysses). This will greatly limit the monthly tracking available for =
Pioneer 10. More information to follow.=20

Stay tuned to this status report.=20

Good day everyone,

Just quickly: I'm moving this week (out into the country side) and will
need a few days to get the dish relocated. Until then I will not have
internet connectivity. I will attempt to dial-up and check mail from
time to time but we don't have much luck using copper wires hanging in
trees around here.

Take care and I look forward to many discussions in the near future.

Sincerely,
R.J. Fear

SETIzens,
	This report will be quite brief, as I am recuperating from a rather hectic
weekend, preceeded by an intense level of activity for this past month!
	The first SETI League Technical Symposium drew a small but enthusiastic
participation (thirty attendees). The quality of technical presentations
exceeded our expectations. (See for yourself by ordering a copy of the
Proceedings via <http://www.setileague.org/admin/applicat.htm#mdse>).
Social opportunities were abundant, ranging from the Friday night
hospitality suite to Saturday night's Awards Banquet, and including
refreshment breaks in the Demo Room all day Saturday, breakfast discussions
in the hotel every morning, and an informal luncheon for participants after
Sunday's membership and board meetings.
	If you didn't already meet our 2001 Bruno Award winner, see the press
release now posted at <http://www.setileague.org/press/pres0105.htm>.
	Because of the large number of papers submitted this year, and generally
inadequate time for presentations, next year's Symposium is being expanded
to two full days, beginning at noon on Friday, 26 April 2002, and running
through noon on Sunday the 28th. Thanks to the kind assistance of member
Prof. Allen Katz, we will once again be using the fine facilities of the
College of New Jersey. For SETICon02, we are beginning our preparations
much earlier. A Call for Papers will be issued next month, with abstracts
due in the Autumn, to allow all submitted papers to be peer reviewed. As
we are hoping for a greatly expanded Proceedings, I ask you all to start
thinking about what SETI experiences you may wish to document and share.
	My thanks to the eleven speakers and various other participants who have
made our first Symposium a great success. Next year will be even better.
	Highlights of the Membership Meeting and Board of Trustees Meeting follow
(with full minutes to be posted to the website next week):
	Financial report: we finished 2000 about $23,000 ahead of budget, and are
thus solvent for at least the next year.
	Committee reports were delivered; progress noted in all areas.
	Old busines: reports on progress with eCommerce, the AAS Grant,
membership, 5-year plan, and email lists.
	New business: reports on nonprofit mailing permit, IAA SETI Committee
participation, summer intenr's work, plans for SETICon02, and executive
direcor's annual report.
	Good and Welfare: special presentation to our host, Dr. Allen Katz.
	Board of Trustees Action: Re-elected existing officers. Adopted minor
bylaws revisions. Extended executive director's contract for one
additional year. At his request, added Bylaws Compliance to executive
director's duties.

	See you all next year!
	Paul

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 30, 2001

STUDENTS FROM ACROSS NATION TO PRESENT JUPITER RESULTS TO JPL

     A few of the 2,300 students from 13 states who have used=20
a huge remote-control radio telescope to measure energy from=20
Jupiter's radiation belts during the past six months will=20
present their results May 4 to scientists at NASA's Jet=20
Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
=20
     The students' measurements span the period when NASA's=20
Cassini spacecraft flew near Jupiter four months ago, so they=20
are useful in the interpretation of radio measurements that=20
Cassini made to map the invisible belts, said Dr. Michael=20
Klein, a JPL radio astronomer and science adviser to the=20
Cassini-Jupiter Microwave Observation Program.

     Tracy Sibbaluca, a 14-year-old eighth grader from=20
Detroit, looks forward to meeting the scientists, but even=20
more to seeing the big radio-antenna dish in the Mojave Desert=20
that she helped to run from a classroom computer at Detroit's=20
University Public School.

     "It gave me a lot of confidence because they trust kids=20
like us with such a valuable telescope," said Arkira Jordan,=20
14, an eighth grader from Opelika, Ala. "I didn't like science=20
so much before, but now I like it better."

     Those two and 10 other students representing the larger=20
group from 26 middle schools and high schools will tour the=20
Goldstone Complex of JPL's Deep Space Network near Barstow=20
while they are in California this week. The students used a=20
dish antenna at Goldstone that is 34 meters (112 feet) in=20
diameter. That dish, the Goldstone-Apple Valley Radio=20
Telescope, served in Goldstone's main function of=20
communicating with spacecraft for three decades, but was given=20
a new role three years ago for student use coordinated by the=20
Lewis Center for Educational Research, in Apple Valley, Calif.=20

     One of Jordan's classmates at Opelika Middle School, 13-
year-old Chase Cox, said, "When I think about what we're=20
doing, it's amazing, because we were collecting data that=20
scientists will be using years from now."

     Opelika science teacher Farrell Seymore said the project=20
has helped his students understand that science is a process=20
of learning, not a set of facts to memorize. "When you are=20
studying something real and it's not simulated, things don't=20
always go the way you expect," he said. "That encourages the=20
kids to use critical thinking skills and try to figure out=20
what the problem is. It's a great experience for them." The=20
Jupiter studies also played into lessons in mathematics,=20
language skills and history, Seymore said.

     Matthew Dillard, 14, a Detroit eighth-grader, said that=20
the chance to be personally involved in research related to=20
Cassini raised his interest in what the spacecraft discovers=20
in coming years. Cassini will begin orbiting Saturn in 2004.=20
The spacecraft will also release the Huygens probe to drop=20
through the thick atmosphere of Saturn's largest moon, Titan.=20
Cassini flew past Jupiter on Dec. 30, 2000, to gain a=20
gravitational boost toward Saturn, and used that opportunity=20
to take pictures and measurements of Jupiter and its=20
surroundings.

     Cassini's radar instrument, which shares the main antenna=20
used for communications and is one of 18 science instruments=20
on the orbiter and probe, was used in listen-only mode to=20
measure radio emissions from high-energy electrons in=20
radiation belts out past Jupiter's atmosphere. Those=20
measurements allow mapping of the radiation sources in greater=20
detail than possible from Earth-based observations. The belts=20
are known to vary over time. Using the Goldstone-Apple Valley=20
Radio Telescope, the students monitored the radiation belts=20
from November to March to determine whether the belts were at=20
a normal or unusual state of activity when Cassini mapped=20
them. The results indicate the belts' activity was at a normal=20
level when Cassini passed, but that some changes could be=20
measured shortly afterwards, said JPL physicist Dr. Scott=20
Bolton. "These measurements will be useful to help scientists=20
learn more about Jupiter's radiation belts," he said.

     The students will present their findings to Dr. Charles=20
Elachi, team leader for the Cassini radar instrument, along=20
with Klein, Bolton, Dr. Steve Levin, Dr. Michael Janssen and=20
other JPL scientists. As of May 1, Elachi also will be JPL's=20
new director. The students' visit is sponsored by the Lewis=20
Center for Educational Research. "These students represent=20
thousands who have collected valuable scientific information=20
while gaining an exciting educational experience," said Jim=20
Roller, the center's vice president for science and=20
technology.

     Additional information about the Lewis Center and the=20
Goldstone-Apple Valley Radio Telescope is available online at=20
http://www.avstc.org. Cassini is a cooperative project of=20
NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.=20
JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in=20
Pasadena, manages Cassini for NASA's Office of Space Science,=20
Washington, D.C. Further information about students' use of=20
the radio telescope and about Cassini's Jupiter flyby is=20

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&=
nbsp;=20
April 30, 2001<BR><BR>STUDENTS FROM ACROSS NATION TO PRESENT JUPITER =
RESULTS TO=20
JPL<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A few of the 2,300 students from 13 =
states=20
who have used <BR>a huge remote-control radio telescope to measure =
energy from=20
<BR>Jupiter's radiation belts during the past six months will =
<BR>present their=20
results May 4 to scientists at NASA's Jet <BR>Propulsion Laboratory, =
Pasadena,=20
Calif.<BR>&nbsp;<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The students' measurements =
span the=20
period when NASA's <BR>Cassini spacecraft flew near Jupiter four months =
ago, so=20
they <BR>are useful in the interpretation of radio measurements that =
<BR>Cassini=20
made to map the invisible belts, said Dr. Michael <BR>Klein, a JPL radio =

astronomer and science adviser to the <BR>Cassini-Jupiter Microwave =
Observation=20
Program.<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Tracy Sibbaluca, a 14-year-old =
eighth=20
grader from <BR>Detroit, looks forward to meeting the scientists, but =
even=20
<BR>more to seeing the big radio-antenna dish in the Mojave Desert =
<BR>that she=20
helped to run from a classroom computer at Detroit's <BR>University =
Public=20
School.<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "It gave me a lot of confidence =
because=20
they trust kids <BR>like us with such a valuable telescope," said Arkira =
Jordan,=20
<BR>14, an eighth grader from Opelika, Ala. "I didn't like science =
<BR>so much=20
before, but now I like it better."<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Those =
two and=20
10 other students representing the larger <BR>group from 26 middle =
schools and=20
high schools will tour the <BR>Goldstone Complex of JPL's Deep Space =
Network=20
near Barstow <BR>while they are in California this week. The students =
used a=20
<BR>dish antenna at Goldstone that is 34 meters (112 feet) in =
<BR>diameter. That=20
dish, the Goldstone-Apple Valley Radio <BR>Telescope, served in =
Goldstone's main=20
function of <BR>communicating with spacecraft for three decades, but was =
given=20
<BR>a new role three years ago for student use coordinated by the =
<BR>Lewis=20
Center for Educational Research, in Apple Valley, Calif.=20
<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; One of Jordan's classmates at Opelika =
Middle=20
School, 13-<BR>year-old Chase Cox, said, "When I think about what we're=20
<BR>doing, it's amazing, because we were collecting data that =
<BR>scientists=20
will be using years from now."<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Opelika =
science=20
teacher Farrell Seymore said the project <BR>has helped his students =
understand=20
that science is a process <BR>of learning, not a set of facts to =
memorize. "When=20
you are <BR>studying something real and it's not simulated, things don't =

<BR>always go the way you expect," he said. "That encourages the =
<BR>kids to use=20
critical thinking skills and try to figure out <BR>what the problem is. =
It's a=20
great experience for them." The <BR>Jupiter studies also played into =
lessons in=20
mathematics, <BR>language skills and history, Seymore=20
said.<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Matthew Dillard, 14, a Detroit=20
eighth-grader, said that <BR>the chance to be personally involved in =
research=20
related to <BR>Cassini raised his interest in what the spacecraft =
discovers=20
<BR>in coming years. Cassini will begin orbiting Saturn in 2004. <BR>The =

spacecraft will also release the Huygens probe to drop <BR>through the =
thick=20
atmosphere of Saturn's largest moon, Titan. <BR>Cassini flew past =
Jupiter on=20
Dec. 30, 2000, to gain a <BR>gravitational boost toward Saturn, and used =
that=20
opportunity <BR>to take pictures and measurements of Jupiter and its=20
<BR>surroundings.<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Cassini's radar =
instrument,=20
which shares the main antenna <BR>used for communications and is one of =
18=20
science instruments <BR>on the orbiter and probe, was used in =
listen-only mode=20
to <BR>measure radio emissions from high-energy electrons in =
<BR>radiation belts=20
out past Jupiter's atmosphere. Those <BR>measurements allow mapping of =
the=20
radiation sources in greater <BR>detail than possible from Earth-based=20
observations. The belts <BR>are known to vary over time. Using the=20
Goldstone-Apple Valley <BR>Radio Telescope, the students monitored the =
radiation=20
belts <BR>from November to March to determine whether the belts were at =
<BR>a=20
normal or unusual state of activity when Cassini mapped <BR>them. The =
results=20
indicate the belts' activity was at a normal <BR>level when Cassini =
passed, but=20
that some changes could be <BR>measured shortly afterwards, said JPL =
physicist=20
Dr. Scott <BR>Bolton. "These measurements will be useful to help =
scientists=20
<BR>learn more about Jupiter's radiation belts," he=20
said.<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The students will present their =
findings=20
to Dr. Charles <BR>Elachi, team leader for the Cassini radar instrument, =
along=20
<BR>with Klein, Bolton, Dr. Steve Levin, Dr. Michael Janssen and =
<BR>other JPL=20
scientists. As of May 1, Elachi also will be JPL's <BR>new director. The =

students' visit is sponsored by the Lewis <BR>Center for Educational =
Research.=20
"These students represent <BR>thousands who have collected valuable =
scientific=20
information <BR>while gaining an exciting educational experience," said =
Jim=20
<BR>Roller, the center's vice president for science and=20
<BR>technology.<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Additional information =
