Hi everybody,

There's new pictures of the Nançay radiotelescope on my web site :
http://www.chez.com/telescope/seti/photos/telescope.html
They have been taken by Michel Richard.

If you can read french, there's also some comments by Tarik Fdil who
made a conference about SETI in Casablanca (Maroc) :
http://www.chez.com/telescope/seti/conf/tarik.html

That's all...

SETIzens,
Please be reminded that the deadline for reserving rooms at the Hampton
Inn (our official Conference Hotel for the SETICon01 technical symposium) is 1
April 2001. I just spoke to the hotel, and they have 21 rooms still
available. You may call them at +1 (215) 860- 1700 to make your
reservations. Be sure to mention "SETI Conference" to get the discount rate.
Although the pre-reg deadline for the conference itself is not until 15
April 2001, an early response will be appreciated. You may use the online
registration form at <http://www.setileague.org/admin/register.htm>.
I look forward to seeing you all during the last weekend in April.

Your help in dispelling this blatant falsehood will be appreciated.

Tim,
I don't know what prompted you to post this, but it is ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE!
After the EQ Pegasi hoax of 2 1/2 years ago, we took great pains to
significantly enhance List security, disabling the MajorDomo "who"
functions and requiring my personal approval for subscriptions to our
closed lists. Our open, unmoderated lists periodically get spammed (that's
one of the problems with making them open), but MajorDomo uses BCC and we
NEVER distribute email addresses. And, as clearly pointed out at
<http://www.setileague.org/admin/roster.htm>, ONLY members are EVER allowed
to receive our membership roster (which carries a warning that its contents
are privileged information, for members' collaboration ONLY, and that we
will NOT tolerate distribution or commercial use in any way.) There are
several statements in our online Policy Manual which reiterate our measures
taken to protect our members' privacy (see, for example,
<http://www.setileague.org/press/intervu.htm>). If one of our members is
violating this policy, we need to know, as we will not hesitate to expel
that person from membership in The SETI League, Inc.
Frankly, if we did sell mailing lists, we might not now be struggling for
our financial survival! But, since we have a STRONG policy of protecting
the privacy of our members, I hope you'll give my comments as wide a
distribution as you did your slanderous statement.
	Respectfully,
		H. Paul Shuch, Executive Director

The person in question has posted a number of messages to USENET with his
genuine email address. Just one posting is sufficient to get you spammed.
I managed to corrupt my email address into dxqqeg.wq@djwhome.demon.co.uk
in just one posting several years ago; I have had 15 attempted spams to
that address since February 1st this year. This is in spite of rejecting
email to this address (although most spammers use bogus return++ addresses
anyway, so wouldn't know of the failures).

I think this is naivety, not malice.

(I post with a genuine address, partly because I was posting before
spam, and partly because I think a certain level of spam can be tolerated
in order to get good communication.)

++ A recent spamming trick is to use a list of genuine addresses and
send small batches of spam so as to appear to originate from each of
those addresses. One only knows ones address is being abused when
one gets the non-delivery reports.
