Subject: Yes, it is the Image of an Exoplanet (ESO PR 12/05)
Dear subscribers,
Astronomers Confirm the First Image of a Planet Outside of Our Solar System
In February and March of this year, astronomers took new images of the young brown dwarf 2M1207 and its giant planet companion with the NACO instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope.
The new images show convincingly that this really is a giant planet, approximately five times the mass of Jupiter, that is gravitationally bound to the brown dwarf. It is thus the first planet that has ever been imaged outside of our solar system.
ESO Press Release 12/05 describing these results is at http://www.eso.org/outreach/press-rel/pr-2005/pr-12-05.html -----
Read the details in ESO Press Release 13/05 at http://www.eso.org/outreach/press-rel/pr-2005/pr-13-05.html With kind regards,
The ESO Public Affairs Dept.
