Hello Gang,
For some really great pictures depicting the vision of what our world
would be like if Project Orion had gone ahead in the 1960'scheck out
NuclearSpace.Com's MULTIMEDIA GALLERY at:
http://www.nuclearspace.com/gallery.htm
In the area of SETI we could probably detect the Electomagnetic Pulses
(EMP's) of Alien Starships that employed the nuclear pulse rocket
technique as they detonated fission or fusion bombs. This would be a
major draw back if we ever did employ such a technique ourselves and
launched an Orion Type vechile ourselves from the Earth's surface. The
EMP generated would knock out electronic equipment on the ground and in
Earth orbit. So while I am great fan of Project Orion I do not think it
would have been a viable technolical option in the short term.
Personally I would have bet my money on a space lanched Project Daedalus
style Fusion Pulsed Engine.
The Ramelov Model Kit company up to a year ago you had a web site at
http://www.sputnik1.com/project_orion1.htm were they advertised an
excellent Project Orion Atomic Pulse Space Ship Model Kit. They also
had a very interesting story line depicting an Orion Mission to Jupiter
and Saturn. I would like to buy one of these models. I even had some
correspondence with Wayne Smith (a fellow member SETIpublic list)
concerning this. Wayne if you are reading this any updates?
