    THE DAY IN SPACE
    ________________
In today's space news from SpaceRef:

-- Beyond the Moon: Inside Bush's space plan (Part 3 of 3)
    http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=918
-- Beyond the Moon: Inside Bush's space plan (part 2 of 3)
    http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=916
-- Beyond the Moon: Inside Bush's space plan (part 1 of 3)
    http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=915

"The Bush administration's new policy for America's space program represents the product of a year of difficult
choices and balanced risk, designed to create a comprehensive approach to human exploration of the solar
system. Developing this policy -- contrary to what some outside the process have suggested -- took a careful,
deliberate and quiet effort. It also is the result of the aftereffects of a crisis that struck at the very core of the
space program. United Press International interviewed senior administration sources for these articles, including
participants at meetings. Based on those interviews, this how the president's space policy came to be."

-- Hubble Servicing Mission SM4 Cancelled by NASA Headquarters (Internal Memos)
    http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewsr.html?pid=11540
-- NASA Cancels Shuttle Mission to Hubble Space Telescope
    http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=917

"NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe directed the cancellation of a previously planned space shuttle mission to
repair and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope today. The mission, named SM4 (being the fourth shuttle visit
to Hubble) was planned for launch some time in 2005. According to internal memo "budget was not a driving
concern, nor was the new Bush space initiative."

-- High Resolution Image of the Surface of Mars
    http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewsr.html?pid=11547

"This close-up look at a patch of martian soil is the sharpest image ever taken of another planet. The picture
was captured by the microscopic imager located on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit's instrument deployment
device, or "arm." Scientists liken the alien soil to clumpy cocoa powder. The upper left corner of the soil patch is
illuminated by direct sunlight and thus appears brighter. The actual size of the patch is about 3 centimeters
    (1.2 inches) across."

-- Stafford-Covey Task Group Issues Interim Status Report
    http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=13446

"The Stafford-Covey Return to Flight Task Group will issue an interim report Tuesday, Jan. 20. The group is
making an independent assessment of NASA's implementation of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board
Space Shuttle return to flight recommendations."
