Subject: Hurricane Halos and Planetary Rings
Space Weather News for Sept. 19, 2003
http://spaceweather.com
HURRICANE HALOS: As Hurricane Isabel advanced on North America yesterday
sky watchers in New England saw some unusually vivid "halos and dogs"
around the Sun. Clouds on the leading edge of storm fronts often produce
such effects--and they were much in evidence ahead of Isabel. Visit
SpaceWeather.com for photos.
PLANETARY RINGS: If you happen to be awake before sunrise on Saturday,
Sept. 20th, step outside and look up. Saturn and the fat crescent moon
will be pleasingly close together in the middle of the constellation
Gemini. Even a small telescope will reveal Saturn's magnificent rings.
SOLAR WIND: Earth is inside a high-speed solar wind stream flowing from a
coronal hole on the sun. Northern Lights have appeared as far south as
Michigan this week. More auroras are possible this weekend, especially at
high latitudes.
