    AAVSO NEWSFLASH SPECIAL NOTICE (August 30, 2003)

    Subject: 1844-09 NOVA SCUTI 2003 - POSSIBLE NOVA IN SCUTUM

    We have been informed by IAU CBAT (IAU Circular 8190) of the discovery of a
    possible nova in Scutum by Hideo Nishimura (Kakegawa, Shizuoka-ken, Japan) on
    T-Max films taken on Aug. 28.58 (mag 8.5) and 29.436 UT (mag about 8.4)
    The position of the object is given as:

    R.A. = 18h49m38s, Decl. = -09o33'45" (equinox 2000.0).

    The object has been visually confirmed by AAVSO observers Andrew Pearce,
    Robert Stine, Rod Stubbings, and Albert Jones. William Liller found the
    object on two red films taken by him on August 26. Observations from these
    five observers include:

    Aug. 26.182 UT 9.8R (on two red films; William Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile)
    Aug. 30.156 9.4 (Robert Stine, Newbury Park, CA, USA)
    Aug. 30.4465 9.3 (Albert Jones, Nelson, New Zealand)
    Aug. 30.461 9.3 (Andrew Pearce, Nedlands, W. Australia)
    Aug. 30.576 9.4 (Rod Stubbings, Drouin, Victoria, Australia)
