Subject: Colour of the Universe - Galaxy Photos - Messenger - Outreach Website

    Dear subscribers,

An international team of astronomers has determined the colour of the
Universe when it was very young. While the Universe is now kind of
beige, it was much bluer in the distant past, at a time when it was
    only 2,500 million years old.

This is the outcome of an extensive and thorough analysis of more than
300 galaxies seen within a small southern sky area. The main goal of
this advanced study was to understand how the stellar content of the
Universe was assembled and has changed over time.

More information is available in ESO PR 34/03, just published at:

    http://www.eso.org/outreach/press-rel/pr-2003/pr-34-03.html

Astronomers Mark Neeser and Peter Barthel have obtained images of
three beautiful spiral galaxies with ESO's Very Large Telescope.
Impressive colour images have been produced by combining several CCD
images in three different wavebands. Look at:

The latest issue of the ESO house journal "The Messenger" (No. 114; 60
pages; December 2003) will be available on the web this afternoon. As
usual, it is full of interesting information about recent achievements
at ESO in the areas of science and technology. Download the PDF-file
    from:

    http://www.eso.org/messenger/

The ESO Outreach web-area has changed its appearance and now features
easy navigation and search, and also printer-optimized versions of the
pages. There are now more than 17,000 pages available, with plenty of
information about projects, with beautiful images, material related to
past and present educational programmes, as well as products from the
EPR Dept., from DVD's to this year's calendar. Enter the site via:

    http://www.eso.org/outreach/

    Kind regards,

    The ESO EPR Dept.
