Eames Office Newsletter
Dear Friend of the Eames Office,
First of all, thanks for all your support of our Powers of Ten Day.
We had almost 10,000 visitors to the site around that broadcast so it
was very exciting. A lot of great comments and enthusiasm from
people who were able to include the film and the ideas in their
classes. We look forward to doing it again with you next year!
Second, I am going to be doing a number of lectures and readings over
the next 2 months so perhaps I will see some of you. Today, I will be
at CalPoly San Luis Obispo, speaking about the Eames Design process
in connection with a small exhibit of modern furniture drawn from
local collections (I admit this is late notice, but the talk was an
impromptu development). Next Monday (October 28) I will be doing a
book signing for my book, "An Eames Primer," at the booksellers,
Spoonbill and Sugartown, in Brooklyn, New York. Later in the month,
there will be lectures in San Diego and Chicago and a book signing at
Hennesy + Ingalls here in Santa Monica. (Check the bottom of the
newsletter, or our site for all details). If you are able to attend
any of these events and are a subscriber to the newsletter, I hope
you will introduce yourself. In this digital age, it is a rare and
wonderful pleasure to put a face with the e-mail.
Last month saw the opening of the traveling Legacy of Invention show
in Milan, Italy at the Triennale. This is the eleventh venue of the
show, organized in 1997 by the Library of Congress and the Vitra
Design Museum. The exhibition is still going strong, introducing new
visitors to the richness and breadth of Charles and Ray Eames' work.
As a regular reader of this newsletter you know, I have been to these
openings and taken a great deal of pleasure in seeing how the core
exhibition (designed by Craig Hodgetts and Ming Fung) has been
adapted in a design sense to each space. Some time in the future I
would like to do an article about the subtle differences between each
exhibition. All of the installations have brought to the fore some
special quality of the exhibit, or the content and Milan is no
exception.
The Triennale's installation, spearheaded by their marvelous in house
team, seems to me to be the warmest of the installations to date. It
manages to convey the richness of the show in a leisurely and
affectionate manner. The space is on the bigger side of the various
venues, but it is not just that. It is almost as if each display
from the core exhibit is treasured in and of itself--this includes
not only the objects, but even the displays from the core exhibit
itself (i.e., the presentations of the original molded plywood test
pieces).
The crowd was passionate and enthusiastic (one would expect no less
in Milan at the height of Fashion Week) on opening night. The Powers
of Ten theater was always full of transfixed visitor and many people
were experiencing the Eameses' films for the first time. The film,
"Glimpses of the USA" was also a source of fascination as well. But
there was also a reverence for the images and objects. And a large
central room allows the visitor to circle the finished chairs (such
as the Lounge Chair or the Chaise Lounge prototype) with appropriate
room to really understand the elegance, simplicity and beauty of the
lines and design. The exhibition will be in Italy through the
beginning of January '03 and it's definitely worth a visit even if
you have seen the show elsewhere.
If you can make it to any of the book-signings, or any of the other
events where I'll be doing a presentation, please introduce yourself.
It would be my pleasure to meet you.
Sincerely,
Eames Demetrios
PRODUCT OF THE MONTH: "House of Cards." A 54 card Picture Deck first
produced in 1952 contains images of what the Eameses called "good
stuff." Six slots on each card allows you to interlock the cards,
building structures limited only by your imagination.
