SETIzens,
I have just sent the following comment to Nature, regarding this article:
Tom Clarke's otherwise excellent article "Alien Hunters Take Screen
Test" (9 October 2002) begs a few minor corrections. It states "The SETI
Institute coordinates the hunt for evidence of alien life, scrutinizing
signals from radio telescopes. They developed the Rio Scale..." In fact,
the SETI Institute is one of about half a dozen organizations around the
world pursuing SETI science. Global coordination, such as it occurs, is
done largely by the SETI Permanent Study Group of the International Academy
of Astronautics, and it is THEY (with SETI Institute participation, to be
sure) who should be credited with developing the Rio Scale.
Regarding the EQ Pegasi hoax of 1998, Mr. Clarke states "An anonymous
amateur astronomer claimed to have received a signal..." This statement
casts doubts on the professionalism of the 1350 amateur radio astronomers
in 63 countries who comprise the nonprofit SETI League, which I am
privileged to head. The EQ Pegasi hoaxter was not an amateur radio
astromer at all, but rather an internet hacker POSING as one.
