Well, folks, I didn't say (and wouldn't say) "bleak" -- that was the
reporter's word! In fact, this article is NOT a fair representation of an
interview I granted recently. In many places, the author put her own words
in quotation marks, and attributed them to me. For example, she says:

>"This year, the Seti League has lost 90 per cent of its funding and has
enough money to stay afloat for one more year," Shuch said.

What I actually said is that, except for membership dues and grants
previously pledged, donations are down 90 percent during the past year, and
that at the present rate, all our cash reserves will be spent in about a year.

There were several other questionable factual details in this article, but
the basic message (that The SETI League is struggling financially, and
making numerous efforts to reduce costs without abandoning our mission or
our members) is indeed accurate.

The SETI League makes full and open public disclosure of our budget and
financial position, at <http://www.setileague.org/finances>. Your support
is appreciated. I believe we're still the best scientific bargain out there!

Yours for SETI success,
        Paul
