Official Space Weather Advisory issued by NOAA Space Environment Center
Boulder, Colorado, USA

SPACE WEATHER ADVISORY OUTLOOK #02- 30
2002 July 23 at 03:09 p.m. MDT (2002 July 23 2109 UTC)

**** SPACE WEATHER OUTLOOK ****

Summary For July 15-21
Space weather increased to strong levels. Category R3 (strong) radio
blackouts occurred on July 15 at 2:08 p.m. MDT (2002 July 15 2008 UTC),
July 18 at 1:44 a.m. MDT (2002 July 18 0744 UTC), and July 20 at 3:30
p.m. MDT (2002 July 20 2130 UTC). A category R2 (moderate) radio
blackout occurred on July 17 at 1:13 a.m. MDT (2002 July 17 0713 UTC).
These blackouts were the result of major flares from two large, complex
sunspot groups. NOAA GOES satellites detected a category S2 (moderate)
solar radiation storm during July 16 - 18 following the major flare on
July 15. A brief category S1 (minor) solar radiation storm occurred on
July 19. Brief category G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm conditions
occurred during July 20 - 21 as multiple coronal mass ejections (CME)
passed Earth. For a list of adverse system effects related to space
weather, please refer to the NOAA Space Weather Scales.

Outlook For July 24-30
Space weather is expected to range from minor to strong levels. Isolated
category R1 (minor) to R3 (strong) radio blackouts are likely. Category
G1 - G2 geomagnetic storm conditions are possible during July 24 - 25
due to an expected CME passage. Category S1 (minor) solar radiation
storms are expected during the period.
