The latest Scientific American has an online article
stating that there may not be many civilizations in the
galaxy based on humanity's examples of various
societies over the centuries:

A quote from the article:

"We evolved in small hunter-gatherer communities of 100 to 200 individuals;
it may be that our species, and perhaps extraterrestrial species as well (assuming
