This Web site on Starships and Space Colonies has a piece of art from the original novel dust jacket for Rendezvous with Rama: http://www.wood13.freeserve.co.uk/artists.htm http://www.wood13.freeserve.co.uk/rama.jpg The caption reads as follows: Book jacket illustration for 'Rendezvous with Rama' by Arthur C. Clarke, 1973. Perspective of the astronauts descending is a bit questionable, but the rest of the picture shows some of Clarke's ideas about a large cylindrical habitat. Note the three radial sections, separated by lighting strips, the longitudinally central 'sea' and the fact that it is big enough to have 'weather'. Note the strong resemblance to the "real" cylindrical space city designs from the 1970s: http://science.nas.nasa.gov/Services/Education/SpaceSettlement/70sArt/art.html This Web page has numerous models from 2001 (and someday from 2010 as well), plus links to other impressive sites on the subject: http://www.starshipmodeler.com/2001/2001int.htm Larry
