A quarter-million users rack up centuries of computer time

By Alan Boyle

MSNBC

May 21 — SETI@home has mushroomed into
the world’s largest experiment in distributed
computing, just a week after its formal launch.
More than a quarter-million people have
downloaded the software, which sifts through
radio data for messages from alien
civilizations. More than 600 years of computer
time have been racked up in a week, with a
year’s worth contributed by a Michigan Tech
network.
