I found three ex WD UHF receivers in a mag ( RadCom ) some four years ago
now for $75.00 each.
These were Pye receivers intended for line-of-sight comms in the frequency
range, 1440-1450Mhz.
Check out your local ex WD supplier and see what he has available.

There are only two hand held scanners I know of that can take the large
input gain of our systems without curling up and dying due to front-end
overload and these are the MVT-7100 from Yupiteru and the AOR-8000.
You can sometimes see these little receivers available on the second hand
market for the $200.00 mark here in the UK.

Hope this helps, cheers, Ken UK.
