Argument 1 on the COSETI site (http://www.coseti.org/argume1.htm) countering
that uplink gain has to be limited at optical wavelengths seems a little odd
to me -- it seems to me (if I've got it right, and please correct me Dr
Kingsley if I have not) to rely on our solar system - if not our planet -
having been observed carefully by ETIs. My problem with this is what kind
of distances are we talking about here? Are there enough ETIs in the galaxy
to allow them to be near enough to us to do this -- even when being
optimistic with the Drake equation?

Also using laser techniques, what kind of beam width could we expect at 50
LY, 100 LY etc (assuming ETIs exist that close) and how accurately can they
target us?
