I'd always assumed that the idea was that a lot of the people interested
in amateur SETI might already have such a receiver for general communications
use. This was the problem I had when someone suggested optical SETI to
me, namely that I'd be spending a lot of money on something that
would probably only be used for the one application (looking at stars
catalogued by someone else didn't appeal).
