Greetings Mathew,
While I don't know much about the IC-8500 receiver, it seems like a
tremendous misuse of expensive resources to dedicate this radio to the
Argus station. I say this because the receiver is designed to work from a
few hundred kilohertz to around two gigahertz (don't know the exact
numbers). While I have no idea what other uses a person would have for
such a machine (a high-end scanner?) I think there are other options
available from the Seti League. And putting a receiver together that is
uniquely designed for this work would be a great learning experience (not
to mention bragging rights for having "done it yourself").

I'll probably get flamed for dissing the IC-8500 in this application, but
there you have it.
