Some scientists hope to learn about the possibility of life on Mars by studying a Martian meteorite; some concentrate on plans for robotic missions to search for life on the red planet itself.

But biologist Penny Boston and others have been looking down below to learn what's up above. They have been researching the possibility of Martian life by crawling through the dank, slimy passageways of caverns deep below the deserts of New Mexico and the jungles of Mexico.
