Yesterday I started reading the Linux sound card device driver and
writing some code to poke at it. I seem to be able to put it in
16-bit mode and I'm guessing it's running at 8ksps. Using Phil Karn's
FFT code I can generate the power spectrum of a snapshot from the card
and display it with gnuplot.

I was thinking of sticking with PC hardware for the moment because
there's a lot to do there but I'm interested in dedicated hardware
