Alfred, I agree with you.
The public needs a point of out-reach, and the SETI-L handily
provides that service. Yes, the public is very interested in the
subject, "Where Are They?", and the subject is volatile.
Quitting the business of public out-reach is a mistake, in my opinion.
When all the yelling and screaming stops and the smoke clears, it
will be known that the SETI-L did its job in a professional manner.
Also, it provided a useful function one which apparently and
perceptually no other organization does. This organum talks to the
fickle public; to do so takes intellect, organization, preparation
When I found the SETI-L it was like a breath of fresh air, an oasis
out of the desert of "intellectually bankrupt" UFOology. Technical
people of like minds searching for the elusive ET, in a practical,
honest endeavor, with organization and focus --better, a way for
those of us not so well educated to do our part.
Please do not take the list underground.

I'd urge all SETI League to remain with the public
lists despite the troubles. Don't give up!
What good is it to debunk something if it is done in
a private closed list to a few followers?
The trouble is caused in the public domain. That is
where we must put out the fires ...
