GIANT SUNSPOT GROUP CRACKLES WITH FLARES, SETTING OFF AURORAS

A large, intensely active sunspot complex has exploded with seven major,
X-class flares in the last few days. They have altered the near-Earth
environment, disrupted radio communications -- and caused beautiful
auroras at night. More aurora displays are likely in the next few days, so
keep watch. The spot group itself is large enough to see with the unaided
eye through a safe solar filter....

    SKY AT A GLANCE

The Moon is full (Harvest Moon) on the night of the 17th. Big, bright Mars
now rises as early as about 10 p.m. and is in good view high in the
southeast after midnight -- and has grown to 16 arcseconds in apparent
diameter. If you catch Saturn before dawn, binoculars will show the
Beehive star cluster just to its left.
