    Icarus was originally a class project for an MIT engineering class in 1967. The professor gave his class a simple instruction: the asteroid Icarus is going to hit the earth in a short time period; save the planet. They proposed using existing Saturn V rockets and some really big nuclear warheads to deflect the asteroid.

    I wrote an earlier version of this for the sadly-departed (and missed) Florida Today Space On-Line website four years ago. In light of the fact that asteroid defense has seen a mini-revival these past few months, I decided it was timely again.
