    FOOD FOR THOUGHT
    -----------------------------------------------------------

    "In the evolution of political-economics
    of the late 20th century
    there is an emerging pattern
    in which yesterday's virtues
    become today's vices
    and vice versa
    vices virtues."

                -R. Buckminster Fuller
(Ethics, "And It Came to Pass Not to Stay" 1976)

The World's First Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Facility

The world's first ocean thermal energy conversion facility
has been commissioned off the west coast of India. The
1MW plant is housed on a 65 meter barge anchored off the port
of Tuticorin, and uses a 'reverse' refrigeration cycle that
relies on the temperature differential of deep sea water
at 7°C and surface water at 28 °C.

Device to probe limits of physics

UK physicists have completed the first crucial element
of an experimental device designed to probe the forces
    that shape our Universe.

A New Type of Solar Cell

Scientists in Japan have made the first device that can
convert solar energy into electricity and then store the
resulting electric charge. Conventional solar cells need
a secondary device, such as a battery, to store the
electrical power generated from light. The photocapacitor
combines the photoelectric and storage functions in a single
    structure.

Brazilian Wins Miss Earth Beauty Pageant

Priscilla Meirelles, a medical student from Brazil, was named
Miss Earth 2004 recently, winning a beauty pageant that
    promotes environmental concerns.

    There are no first and runner-up finishers in the competition;
    each of the final four receives a title: Miss Earth, Miss Fire;
Miss Air; and Miss Water. The Miss Earth pageant, launched
three years ago by a Philippine production outfit, requires
candidates to be aware of environmental problems faced by
    their respective countries.

    Ideas Stolen Right From Nature

Nature is pretty good at solving engineering problems,
so designers are increasingly turning to biomimetics to
    improve their products and ideas.

    Winning the Oil Endgame
    by Rocky Mountain Institute

This independent, peer-reviewed synthesis for American
business and military leaders charts a roadmap for getting
the United States completely, attractively, and profitably
off oil. The strategy integrates four technological ways
to displace oil: using oil twice as efficiently, then substituting
biofuels, saved natural gas, and, optionally, hydrogen.

Cleaner and Greener Emissions Reduction Calculator

Energy efficiency can translate into a certain amount
of greenhouse gas reduction, but how much? This online
calculator illustrates how reducing energy consumption at
your home or business can cut emissions and save money.
Also breaks down emissions reduction by greenhouse gas:
    CO2, nitrogen oxides, etc.
