TimesEames Office
Newsletter
March 2003
Dear Friend of the Eames Office,
It is difficult to write a newsletter such as this with this war in the
world. Obviously, such a difficulty is a minor concern on one level,
but given our family's responsibilities for taking care of such
compassionate and beautiful work, it still weighs on us. One answer
came from a Swiss architect who visited the Eames House last week and
told us that he did so as it was simply because it was the most
peaceful place in Los Angeles--so he could experience some serenity in
the midst of everything that is going on.
So this will be a brief newsletter, sharing more time sensitive ideas
rather than less.
First of all, for some time now we have been planning a tour of the
interior of the Eames House. We are pleased to announce that the event
will take place on June 21 and June 22, the weekend of the summer
solstice. This opportunity to experience the interior of the Eames
House will be hosted by the Eames family. The fee is 90.00(US$) for
the approximately one and half hour visit. We are still putting it
together, but anticipating that it will be a lot of fun with some
special treats. We feel it is part of the ongoing mission of the Eames
Office: communicating, preserving and extending the work of Charles and
Ray Eames. While the date is, of course, the Summer Solstice, it is
near Charles and Ray's wedding anniversary (June 20) and Charles'
Birthday (June 17). Hope you can join us. Information about the event
and how to make a reservation will be available on our website April 1
(no fooling).
Second, some kudos to good friends and colleagues of Charles and Ray's.
Elmer Bernstein, who collaborated with Charles and Ray on over 30
films, was honored this year with an Academy Award nomination for best
score (Far From Heaven). And, Alex Funke, who, with Michael Weiner was
in charge of production on the 1977 version of Powers of Ten, won his
second Oscar. This time it was for Visual Effects for Lord of the
Rings: The Two Towers. Congratz to both of them!
Last, if you are in Los Angeles this week for WestWeek, you are all
invited to the opening tonight of LA, LA, LA: Los Angeles by Design and
Not by Design. It is a multi-visual experience in an unused space at
the Pacific Design Center. There are over 3 dozen screens and monitors
and projections showing images on the walls of a 10-15,000 square foot
space, relating in some way to design and architecture of LA.
The seed for the program was a very interesting multimedia show done at
LACMA 25 years ago by a group called Environmental Communications which
will be shown as well. The Eames Office contributed a group of clips
of Eames films (including a piece from Day of the Dead) and the 901
film. I myself contributed a video about Unknown LA architecture and
design, featuring stories from Kymaerica. Julius Schulman has images in
the show and there are contributions from many, many different
architects. The event is in Room 377 of the Blue Building and is open
Tuesday night (3/25/03) from 7-10 PM, and Wednesday and Thursday during
the day from 9-5. I hope you can make it.
Until next month, peace and good wishes to all.
Sincerely,
Eames Demetrios
