WIDELY SCATTERED FIRES ACROSS NORTH AFRICA
Thousands of fires burning across northwestern and central Africa since November 2002 have been sending heavy smoke as well as high concentrations of carbon monoxide westward across the Atlantic. This Terra MOPITT scene shows CO measurements from Jan. 27 - Feb. 2, 2003.

BUSHFIRES RAGING IN SOUTHEAST AUSTRALIA
More than 2 million acres have been scorched in the bushfires in southeast Australia, exporting a lot of smoke from the region. The cloudy skies shown in this true-color MODIS image from Feb. 6, 2003, hint at improving weather conditions for firefighters.

Dozens of small fires were scattered across the southern U.S. on Feb. 4, 2003. The fires were detected by the MODIS instrument on the Aqua satellite.
