    Eames Office Newsletter
    January, 2003

Dear Friend of the Eames Office,

I am thrilled to report that the Library of Congress/Vitra Design
Museum exhibition: "Charles and Ray Eames: A Legacy of Invention" has
opened at Artium, a beautiful new museum in Vitoria-Gastaez in Spain.
It is, by all accounts, a wonderful installation. I personally did
not have the pleasure of going, but our family was well represented
by three generations. Charles and Ray's' daughter, granddaughter and
great grandson (Lucia, Llisa, Martin and Llisa's husband Mark) all
attended. Vitoria-Gastaez is about an hour from Bilboa in Spain's
    Basque region.

Visit Artium's site @ www.artium.org It is a trilingual (Euskera,
Spanish, and English) site and it will give you a bit more of a feel
for the place. Lucia and Llisa reported that it was an excellent
installation put together by an extremely dedicated and passionate
staff. In addition, the museum has wide-ranging support in the local
community which is, of course, essential to the future of this new
institution. The exhibit was well received in the media. Lucia and
Llisa gave numerous interviews along with Alexander von Vegesack,,
the director of the Vitra Design Museum.

I am personally sorry I missed this opening, but I had already
committed long ago to a series of talks in Austin and Houston that
went quite well. Though some of my hosts were kind enough to express
shock that I had come to Houston instead of Spain, it was actually
exciting to think of how much education about the work of Charles and
Ray Eames was going on quite literally, simultaneously. My talks
were at the University of Texas in Austin and at the University of
Houston. Both have vigorous architecture programs and it was great to
talk to so many students and designers. Herman Miller also sponsored
some other events, including a book signing. It was a great trip.

In our gallery, having just taken down the Eames 3-D photography
show, we are able to show the Eames Contract Storage (1961) in an
interesting way. We hope you'll come down and visit. You'll see the
Murphy bed from ECS pulled out on the floor with a very charming use
of Crosspatch as a bedspread. The entire Gallery space has been
rearranged and people seem to feel even more comfortable in sitting
and trying out all the Eames furniture.

It being the January newsletter, it is time to do our annual recap of
the visitors who came to the Eames House in 2002. So I will turn the
rest of this newsletter over to Bernadine's report on the visitors.

Hi. This is Bern speak. It's always a pleasure for me to meet and
greet people who come to visit the Eames House. Experiencing the
Eames House through your eyes clears my own vision all over again.
Looking over the guest book entries is a lesson in how far the Eames
legacy has spread and also where work needs to be done. We received
more than 3000 visitors to the House last year. While people came
from all over the U.S., it appears that we'll have to do better at
spreading the word to Alaska, Delaware, North and South Dakota,
Montana,Wyoming and Utah as we do not have any records of visitors
from those States. And again, international visitors came from all
around the world: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile,
Croatia, Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, Holland, India, Israel,
Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Scotland,
Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay, Singapore, and Switzerland. It is,
indeed, a tribute to the vision and work of Charles and Ray that you
all make time to visit the Eames House. We appreciate it. Please
continue to spread the word, and do plan another visit.

    See you at the Gallery,

    Best,

    Eames Demetrios
