Subject: [lunar-update] Google News Alert - Bush "return to the moon"
Well, this may be taken as spam by some and may seem to be beating a dead
horse. Sorry.
Good day.
A number of you folks have pointed out that this recent buzz about Bush
possibly saying something about going back to the Moon has been denied, or
not yet to be even given to him to read, or that it might be just politics
for a re-election effort.
TRUE.
THE QUESTION FOR YOU FOLKS IS, DO YOU WANT TO SEE IT HAPPEN?
What follows below is the result of a service the GOOGLE search engine has
started providing, and that is a search of the News Media and an e-mail of
the results on a scheduled basis.
I signed up for that yesterday after doing a search and providing this list
with the results yesterday (although I miss-copied a URL).
What I think the Internet may provide is a means for folks to see how much
activity is being generated on a given subject and I think that as the News
Media start reading and copying what has been posted, the politicians will
start to notice too.
I don't respond to chain letters and requests to re-post or forward the
latest jokes.
BUT.
I do think that if all of you went to your favorite search engine and asked
for information on what interests you, those monitoring the hits might get
your favorite URLs to the top of their search engine and when services like
GOOGLE start responding, others will see what is up there also.
Those that have web log sites are starting to be noticed too.
Folks are publishing on the Internet and are being read.
Others are picking up on what is being read.
Sort of an opinion pole without having to answer the questions.
If the politicians start seeing the groundswell of interest, they might just
wonder who is going to vote for what in the upcoming elections.
I know that you folks around the world don't vote in the USA, but you might
have an effect on how those here vote, just by your interest in what is
being published.
Now if the next space conference is held in India, and then China or Europe,
maybe there will be some raised eyebrows in the USA too. MAYBE.
---- http://www.space.com/news/moon_declaration_031205.html snip The weeklong gathering brought together representatives from the major spacefaring nations under the banner of the International Lunar Exploration Working Group (ILEWG). This was the fifth gathering of nations that are actively pursuing exploration of the Moon, said Steve Durst, a key conference organizer and head of Space Age Publishing Company with offices in Hawaii. Durst told SPACE.com that the meeting was goal oriented, rather than just academic, with the purpose of the conference to see people back on the Moon within the decade. The next ILEWG meeting is to be held next November in India, he said, with China or Europe to host the working group in 2005. snip ---- Also, not everyone agrees that NASA is the best way to get back to the Moon or that JUST the Moon is where we should be. If you read Buzz Aldrin's article for the NY Times you will see he has his own ideas and he has a company that would like to supply services as well. http://www.starbooster.com/sb_team.htm ---- http://www.nytimes.com/2003/12/05/opinion/05ALDR.html?ex=1071637579&ei=1&en= 5328e7b706496daa OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR Fly Me to L 1 By BUZZ ALDRIN Published: December 5, 2003 For the last 24 hours, news reports have been soaring into orbit that President Bush and NASA are busy preparing their vision for the future of America's space program — and that this vision may involve sending astronauts back to the moon, and perhaps establishing some sort of permanent base there. I applaud the instinct, but I think that a moon shot alone seems more like reaching for past glory than striving for new triumphs. Instead, I think the next step in our space program should be to create a floating launching pad for manned and unmanned missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. This is not a task for the unfinished International Space Station, which is intended to be a floating laboratory rather than a bridge to the heavens. A much more practical destination than the moon or the space station is a region of space called L 1, which is more than two-thirds of the way to the moon and is where the gravity fields between the Earth and Moon are in balance. Setting up a space port there would offer a highly stable platform from which spacecraft could head toward near-Earth asteroids, the lunar surface, the moons of Mars and wherever else mankind decides to travel. snip ---- And if you get all the way to the bottom of this missive you will see a note about Lockheed upgrading the launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California to handle the Atlas 5 rocket. So an interest in looking up if you are the manufacturer of rockets. - LRK - Okay, enough noise from me. Let me know how I can best serve.
