TOP NEWS
A new program is needed to encourage scientists and educators to work together,
marshaling scientific knowledge, financial resources and teacher expertise to
boost student achievement, says a new National Research Council report. The
report outlines the organization, operation and funding necessary for such a
partnership among government policy-makers, educators, the academic community
and private industry.

Representatives from seven African academies of science are visiting the U.S.
National Academies this week and next as part of an effort to strengthen the
role of science advice in policy-making across the African continent and to
promote international collaboration among science, engineering and medical
researchers.

Using several commercially available lightweight materials and technologies in
its trucks and trailers could help the U.S. Army make its fleet more agile and
fuel-efficient and reduce its costs over the long term, says a new report from
the National Academies' National Materials Advisory Board. In addition, the
Army could stimulate new advances in lightweight materials and manufacturing
technologies by investing directly in private- and academic-sector research and
development partnerships. The report identifies opportunities for lightweight
materials research and development that are achievable over short, medium and
longer time frames for structural components only, such as vehicle frames and
drive trains.

The plan to assess the multibillion-dollar restoration of Florida's Everglades
is well-grounded in current scientific theory, but steps need to be taken so
that environmental monitoring information is readily available to those
implementing the overall restoration effort, says a new national Research
Council report. Formal links between these groups would ensure that decisions
are based on the most up-to-date scientific information. Also, the plan needs
to place greater consideration on how population growth and land-use changes
will affect the restoration effort and vice versa.

Progress in the nation's scientific, medical and technical communities goes
hand-in-hand with the goal of diversity, said the presidents of the National
Academies in a statement this week. The Supreme Court is hearing arguments this
week in two cases that challenge the right of colleges and universities to
account explicitly for race in student admissions. The statement urges the
court to allow institutions of higher education to apply appropriate programs
and policies to achieve the diversity necessary for the future of the research
enterprise, the mission of higher education and the fulfillment of America's
promise of opportunity for all.

SITE HIGHLIGHTS
The newest release in the Beyond Discovery series, "The Bidding Game," explores
the trail of developments in game theory, a mathematical field that began in the
1920s as basic research into strategies of parlor games like poker. Principles
of game theory are now routinely applied to multibillion-dollar auctions and
the field has even made its way into the daily lives of ordinary people.
