Welcome to S&T's Skywatcher's Bulletin. More information on the items
below is available on our Web site, SkyandTelescope.com, at the URLs
provided. Clear skies!

MORNING OCCULTATION BY THE CRESCENT MOON
On Thursday morning, October 3rd, perhaps the best lunar occultation of
2002 will occur for North American observers as the magnitude 3.5 double
star Eta Leonis is hidden by the Moon. A small telescope will be needed to
watch the star disappear behind the bright portion of the 13 percent
waning crescent. The occultation will be best seen from the eastern 2/3rds
of the United States, but also from populous parts of southern Ontario and
southern Quebec, most of Mexico, and Central America north of Costa Rica.
The dark-side reappearance will be difficult to see for observers in the
Atlantic and Eastern time zones due to interference from morning twilight;
skywatchers in the Central time zone will have a nice view of the emerging
star. Predicted disappearance times for more than 200 North American
cities can be found at:

VIEW A VARIABLE
The naked-eye eclipsing variable star Algol should be in one of its
periodic dimmings, magnitude 3.4 instead of its usual 2.1, for a couple
hours centered on 1:56 a.m. EDT Friday morning (10:56 p.m. PDT Thursday
evening). Algol takes several additional hours to fade and brighten. "The
Minima of Algol," an article that provides a timetable predicting the
star's variability, can be found here:

This Friday and Saturday evening, look for the crescent Moon, Mars, and
Mercury low in the east at dawn. To read more about what's happening in
