THE WORLD TONIGHT NEWSLETTER | 2001 News | Volume 30 | November | Number 1:

November 6, 2002:

Greetings from Dennis Gonzales.

I’m back!
I hope you all had a very scary Halloween this year. I know I did.
I’ve been completely busy designing a special segment for the blueprint section for our website. We hope to have a new Discovery One Interior interactive blueprint in the Technology section very soon. This month, we have a lot of "Space Odyssey" information to report to you from the World Tonight.
Since it was the last day for the film "Signs" at a local theater, I finally had the time to escape my job to see the science fiction thriller.
My review is that it has been a very long time to see a great science fiction film with an excellent script, acting with an intelligent plot. The cinematography is original and beautiful, which I believe this film will become a classic if not a runner up for "Best Picture" of the year. "Signs" is diffidently on my list of science fiction films of all time.
For more information about "Signs", visit the official website at http://bventertainment.go.com/movies/signs/index.html.

HAL 9000 Website Update:
Mike Jackson’s domain is FINALLY up but most of his old site is not uploaded, including the HAL 9000 section. Mike reports that it will take some time to get the entire website back on line but in the meantime, visit Mike’s new website and the HAL 9000 section at http://www.mental-pictures.com/
If you have any questions about his HAL 9000 screen savor or his website, email Mike at mental@digiscape.com.

Space Update:
Endeavour is scheduled to begin STS-113 between 11 p.m. CST Nov. 10 (0500 GMT Nov. 11) and 3 a.m. CST (0900 GMT) Nov. 11. STS-113 will be the 16th shuttle flight to visit the station and will continue the outward expansion of the orbital outpost with the delivery of the P1 (P-One) Truss. For detail information about the next mission, visit Human Space Flight website: http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/shuttle/

Spacesuit Update:
"2001" fan, Dana Lubich reports to the World Tonight about women spacesuits!
"I came across a site called "Women in Spacesuits." He has photos of women in spacesuits from movies and television series from the '50's to today. The '80's page shows pictures of the 2001-like suit from Titan
Find (http://members.aol.com/munday6877/suit80.htm.)
And what appears to be an exact replica of the blue Discovery suit was seen in the "Babylon Squared" episode of Babylon Five on the '90's page
(http://members.aol.com/munday6877/suit90.htm.)"

2001 Film/TV alert:
"2001" fan Dana Lubich reports to the World Tonight a "Space Odyssey" theme on television. "Dominoes' Pizza has a new commercial advertising a new chicken dish. People are eating it to the tune of Also Sprach Zarathustra. I guess if you put two pizza boxes together, end to end, they do look like a monolith. Which makes me wonder-If the monolith doesn't deliver you through the Star Gate in thirty minutes or less, do you get your money back?"
I happen to see this commercial this past weekend and it’s pretty obvious that "2001" is the main central theme. I guess Kubrick’s film will always be in our culture no matter what year we’re in.

Website Update:
This week, the fans respond from last years "2001: A Space Odyssey" theme crazy for the website!
"2001" fan, Dana Lubich sent to the World Tonight for our Fan Artwork category the "31 Flavors" flavor of the month sign from January 2001, called "2001: a Chocolate Odyssey." The image is a copy of the magnetic sign on their menus.

"2001" fan, Brian Shook sent to the World Tonight for our Fan Artwork category, his used "2001: a Cash Odyssey" New Jersey instant lottery ticket from the summer of 2001.

"2001" fan Terry Boblet has updated her web page in the "2001" furnishing category with an scan of the Metropolitan Home Magazine page of Henning Koppel’s 1957 Caravel flatware for Georg Jensen. The flatware looks exactly like the AJ Flatware. Visit Terry’s page at http://www.2001exhibit.org/arts/terry_2001flatware2.html
Terry also reports to the World Tonight that you can make replacements on your Arne Jacobsen flatware at Replacements, Ltd. The Arne Jacobsen pieces that Replacements now have are the spoons and forks and they're only $15 each. Her other silver pieces were $50-$100 each, depending on the piece. Terry says from experience with Replacements, Ltd. is a really good service. Visit their website at replacements.com

"2001" fan and space enthusiast, Larry Evans from the Orange County Space Society reports to the World Tonight that TMA-1 is alive and well with the Russians. "Not sure if you are aware, but a momentous event occurred this last week. In Russia they have been flying a capsule called the Soyuz TM for many years.
They have recently upgraded the capsule so that it will be more conducive for tourist flights. Modifications include the ability to handle both larger and smaller passengers than before. In addition, all of the functions that used to have to be performed by the person in the tourist seat have been rerouted so the tourist no longer has to be trained to help run the capsule, but can simply go along for the ride. This means a much abbreviated training time and maybe even a lowering of the basic price of a tourist flight.
The most interesting thing about this is that because of the modifications, the Soyuz now has a new classification and is now know as the Soyuz TMA, that the flight that took off to the ISS just a few days ago was the flight of TMA-1.
I did a really bad (i.e., quick) version of what the scene must have been like on the launch pad with Moonwatcher and his tribe. Hope you get a laugh out of it."

Well, I did think his artwork deserve attention. Larry’s image is posted in the Fan Art in the Gallery category. Go to the Gallery 4 page at:

I’m looking for talented model makers and digital artists to help me design and build spaceships and other technology from Sir Arthur C. Clarke’s "2061" and "3001" books. The request is part of my campaign to convince moviemakers the importance of bringing the books to the big screen. And using this website is a palette in behalf of Sir Arthur C. Clarke. Starship Modeler
Long time "2001" fan for this website, Robert Carey reports to the World Tonight that Starship Modeller just this week put up a review of the Lunar Models Discovery kit. You can check it out at http://www.starshipmodeler.com/2001/md_disc.htm

But Robert also warns us that someone is auctioning recast versions of the Lunar Models' Discovery kit on ebay. Lunar's kit is pretty rough as it is so he imagines that any recast of it wouldn't be worth any money, "especially" since the auctions are starting at near-Lunar price points. I'd advise anyone interested in getting this kit to go directly to Lunar at their new site, http://lunarmodelsonline.com
