Subject: ESO Press Releases, Educational Projects

Dear subscribers,

we have issued two new Press Releases, very different in nature, but
both of wide interest.

The first, PR 09/02, is available at:

http://www.eso.org/outreach/press-rel/pr-2002/pr-09-02.html

and concerns the unexpected discovery of a young stellar object with a
dust and gas disk. Contrary to other objects of this type, it is
located in the outskirts of the natal cloud, i.e. it is not heavily
obscured and is easily observable with large telescopes. It is in fact
a "copy" of our solar system at a very young age.

Another communication, PR 08/02, is about the new educational programme
"Catch a Star!" , cf.:

http://www.eso.org/outreach/press-rel/pr-2002/pr-08-02.html

This is an innovative project, launched by ESO and the European
Association for Astronomy Education (EAAE). It welcomes all students
in Europe's schools to an exciting web-based programme with a
competition. It takes place within the context of the EC-sponsored
European Week of Science and Technology (EWST) - 2002. The final event
where the prizes will be announced, is on November 8, 2002.

ESO is organising a teachers training course, FAST2002, in August
2002. Read the details on the dedicated webpage:

http://www.eso.org/outreach/eduoff/fast2002/

Note that the deadline for applications is June 1, 2002.

Kind regards,

The ESO EPR Dept.
