THE DAY IN SPACE
________________
In today's space news from SpaceRef:

-- European astronomers get their first chance to detect rocky planets
around other worlds
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=7573

Astronomers from ESA's Member States are preparing to take part in a
French-led mission to be the first to search for rocky planets around other
stars. The mission, COROT, is an important stepping stone in the European
effort to find habitable, Earth-like planets around other stars.

http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewsr.html?pid=4807
-- NASA Space Infrared Telescope Facility Prepares to Integrate With
Spacecraft for Mission to Study Early Universe
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=7572

The Space Infrared Telescope Facility, scheduled to launch on January 9,
2003, will study the early universe and hunt for planet-forming regions in
dust disks around nearby stars. It will also detect objects by looking for
the heat they emit in the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.

-- NASA to Try to Contact Pioneer 10 Spacecraft Again
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=7566

On March 2, 2002, scientists operating a radio telescope at the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory's Deep Space Network (DSN) in Madrid, Spain, will
attempt to duplicate the feat they accomplished last spring, when they
successfully established contact with the spacecraft after a silence of
eight months.

-- Solar Wind Buffets Vast Jupiter Region, Team Approach Reveals
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=7563
-- Unique gathering of spacecraft yields new views, clues on Jupiter's
Magnetosphere
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=7569

Scientists simultaneously using a combination of NASA spacecraft have seen
into the workings of an invisible whirling bubble of charged particles
surrounding Jupiter.

-- Massive Star Pair Raises Dust While Doing the Tango
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=7564

A Canadian-led research team using the Gemini Observatory has released
tantalizing evidence that tiny dust particles ejected by hot, massive
stars, may survive long enough to reach the interstellar medium. This kind
of process might have provided some of the materials necessary for the
early formation of planetary systems in the young Universe.
