Subject: Action Alert-- Pacific Lumber/Maxaam has just starteda new roundof logging. How you can help.
Hi Friends,
Forest defenders, who are often the only line of defense between the ancient
forests and clear-cuts, are in the midst of several direct actions in
Humboldt County, California. There are sitters at the Mattole River
watershed. The tree-sits in Freshwater continue and the Aradia and Gypsy
Mountain campaign is still going strong and picking up momentum. Shunka, a
friend of COL has been in Aradia for over a week and from his view he can
see the loggers heading in his direction. As of today, December 11, 2002, he
has been able to witness the back cutting of trees on Gypsy Mountain (01382)
and in another area called Avalon (00439).
This redwood grove is near the Van Duzen River and just up the ridge from
the place where, David Nathan "Gypsy" Chain was murdered in, 1998. (Gypsy
was killed by a logger/employee of Maxxam/PL who fell a tree on him, while
he was participating in non-violent civil disobedience against the
cooperation.) This Old Growth redwood forest contains 11% of Pacific
Lumber's (PL) old growth holdings and is the last pristine segment of land
in the area. It is adjacent to Grizzly State Park and could easily be
attached to the Park holdings. North Coast Earth First (NCEF) is requesting
that all of Gypsy Mountain, including Aradia, be set aside as a memorial.
There has been dialog with PL and they are willing to sell the land. NCEF
believes the price has already been paid with Gypsy's life. However, the
cutting has already begun and NCEF would support a formal purchase to
protect it from save Maxxam/PL.
You can help by calling Maxxam/PL and asking them to stop the cutting and
save Gypsy Mountain plot # 01382, including Aradia and a buffer zone around
it.

Call California Governor, Gray Davis and urge him to stop Maxxam/PL
immediately from any further cutting on, Avalon plot # (00439), until a
viable solution can be reached. Emplore Davis to honor his campaign promises
from March 15, 1998 to ensure that, "Š all old-growth trees are spared from
the lumberjack's ax", which would also include Aradia.
