Subject: Briefing Message for Pioneer 10 Downlink Only Support on DOY 340 at DSS-63

Good Monday morning here. As predicted, I have been busy with other
tasks and have not passed anything to you folks for some time. Hope
you are on enough lists to keep you informed.

Would like to pass a bit about some local activity.

We had an up-link track for Pioneer 10 last week and a down-link
track with Spain about 22 hours and 24 minutes later. Spain saw the
down-link but was unable to lock up on telemetry. It was about -183
dbm down and below their noise threshold coming at them from an
elevation of about 26 degrees above the horizon.

Goldstone had radiated a carrier for the uplink at about 326 KW and
it appears that Pioneer 10's transmitter power may be somewhat less
than 8 watts for the return broadcast.

Maybe after 30 years is getting a bit tired. Will wait and see if
another track can be arranged early 2003.

The SETI folks at Arecibo tracked the Pioneer 10 down-link and Peter
Backus sent Dave Lozier to plots like he did before. I can forward
the post to anyone that hasn't seen what a trace looks like or just
collects Pioneer 10 items. :-)

A Space.com article (with pop ups) from a previous 30 year anniversary track.

Thanks for listening and continuing to look up.
